Adventures with old buildings

After a long walk (the Metro wasn’t running today!) and a quick vintage fair session this morning, I met up with Mum, Dad and Geth again and we headed off in the car to see some local archaeology-related stuff. First up was Derwentcote Steel Furnace, an 18th century structure that was apparently featured on an episode of Time Team at some point.

Derwentcote Steel Furnace
I’m guessing the ground was originally slightly lower!

We then headed to the Land of Oak & Iron visitor centre, mainly because they had a coffee shop and everyone wanted a coffee. They did also have some wall features.

Stuff that used to exist in the area!

They also had this bell, which might have come from a Napoleonic warship, but it’s been lost and recovered so many times that nobody’s really sure.

It’s also not enough of a bell to ring anymore.

Finally, we headed to Corbridge to see the excavated Roman town there. We’d missed the opening hours, but there’s so much of it you can still see the buildings from outside.

Lots of Roman streets!

After that, it was back to Newcastle for Italian food and more ginger beer. It’s been a nice weekend, but I should definitely get back to normal eating tomorrow!

Vintage fair haul: Lou Lou’s Newcastle Vintage Fair

There were two vintage fairs going on in town today – there was also a kilo sale going on at Northumbria SU – but as I’m limiting myself to just one or two pieces per vintage fair day at the moment, I thought it’d be a bit of a waste to go to the kilo sale, so I stuck to Lou Lou’s at the Civic Centre. One piece only today – adding to my vintage ’80s jumper collection!

It’s a good time of year for vintage fairs, so I should be able to collect a few more jumpers and other things over the next couple of months!

Out on the town

I did my long run this morning instead of going to parkrun, as I won’t have time for a long run tomorrow. I’m getting used to the treadmill now, and it feels a lot more manageable for hours-long runs than pounding the pavements, especially seeing as I’ve got all these BBC4 music documentaries that I need to clear off the digibox.

After my run, I did a bit of tidying and then headed into town to meet up with Mum and Dad (and Geth, who’d been at a gaming tournament all morning). We had a couple of drinks (and I was gratified to find that ginger beer was available everywhere I went) and then went for a meal at El Torero, a tapas place that is one of my favourite restaurants in Newcastle. There’s lots of veggie options and the food is quite Slimming World-friendly (I just need to syn the oil they cook it in…and the cheesecake I inevitably have at the end!).

More adventures about town tomorrow.

Booze Alternative: Britvic Ginger Beer

Over the last month and a bit, I’ve tried quite a few ginger beers and ales, and I’ve discovered that there are two things I prefer in this particular subgroup of beverages:

  1. A sweet and strong taste.
  2. Just enough spice to add nicely to the above without causing me to have a coughing fit while drinking it.

Britvic Ginger Beer, I have found, fits both criteria beautifully.

Britvic Ginger Beer.

I first tried this one in the bar at the Red Lion in Newburgh, where we were staying for Jen’s 30th birthday a few weeks ago. There was a bit of confusion, because the bar had both Britvic Ginger Beer and Britvic Ginger Ale, but according to the barman it was definitely the ginger beer that I had. Anyway, it was delicious, and so when we were in Leeds last Saturday night, I was delighted when Geth returned from the hotel bar with another bottle so that I could try it again.

It was still the tastiest of ginger beers, so I will continue to look out for it wherever I go!

The twelve-eyed monster

Being very short-sighted, I’m always carrying around a ridiculous number of ‘pairs of eyes’ with me – regular glasses, old glasses for running (my regular ones don’t fit into my Croakies), daily disposable contact lenses for dressy occasions, prescription sunglasses to swap out with my regular glasses on sunny days, and non-prescription sunglasses to wear over my contact lenses when dressy occasions coincide with sunny days. It’s not the whole collection, but it’s not far off.

Today involved a trip to the optician for a double feature contact lens check and eye test, as Boots have been holding my contact lenses hostage while my details have been out of date. This meant that they also tried to get me to update my glasses, but my prescription’s not changed enough that I feel I desperately need new ones, so I’ll leave it until later in the year.

The rest of the day has mainly involved editing for clients, writing, and listening to radio shows and podcasts. I’m now looking forward to a weekend with family.

Gradual progress

A typical busy Thursday. I did my speed run first thing, went to Slimming World (another half a pound off this week, still crawling slowly back to target range), and then went to Pilates in the evening. That’s our current Pilates course finished, so the next couple of Thursdays will be slightly less busy.

Geth and I didn’t buy cards or really do anything for Valentine’s Day (we normally have takeaway, but we’re trying to avoid that now we’re both on Slimming World), but he did bring me back some tasty ginger beers last night, so I’m enjoying one now.

Another hectic day tomorrow! Hoping next week will be a little more sedate.

Phone Box Thursday: Trossachs Pier, Loch Katrine

It’s another of Mum and Dad’s phone box spots!

Interestingly, there are several photos of this phone box online that indicate it was only turned into a defibrillator box at some point between 2016 and 2018. Trossachs Pier is in the middle of nowhere and there seems to be a lot of cycling and other activity going on, so this could be a very useful development.

Another one from Loch Katrine next week.

A productive Wednesday

Another good, productive day of editing, followed by a lot of new stuff learnt at ukulele class. I’m really happy with the speed of progress in our classes – every week there’s something new to practice.

The usual busy Thursday tomorrow, but I’m still planning to squeeze in some editing.

OOTD 13th February 2019

2019 Pizzas #3: Livin’ Italy Margherita

As I mentioned on Sunday, Geth and I found a new favourite Leeds restaurant when we were in town for the Tears For Fears gig on Saturday night. Livin’ Italy Dough House specialises in pizza and cocktails. While my cocktail days are obviously over, I was super excited about the pizza!

However, a spanner was thrown in the works when we had bruschetta for starter. The Livin’ Italy bruschetta is the greatest, most incredible bruschetta I have ever had, and so anything less than a truly special pizza would have paled in comparison. Unfortunately, the pizza that followed was not quite special enough.

Livin' Italy Margherita
Livin’ Italy Margherita.

Don’t get me wrong. It was really well-made pizza – the kitchen took absolutely ages making the food, which is a sign of a good restaurant (but unfortunately a little anxiety-inducing when you’ve got a show to get to!), and it’s probably the closest thing I’ve found in the UK to actual Italian restaurant pizza, and it did taste really nice – but the base was a little bit dry and crispy for my taste, and they were a bit stingy with the toppings.

I’ll still have a slice next time I’m there, but I’ll be topping and tailing it with bruschetta and gelato (we didn’t have time for gelato on this occasion, and I’m desperate to try it ’cause it looks really good!).

Close to the edit

I did another treadmill run this morning, which means I’m getting through my recorded TV programmes at a good pace!

I also got a couple of editing jobs done for clients – as I said yesterday, it’s nice to have ‘day job’ work again after a quiet month – and then got on with my own editing. I was nervous about hacking down my novel wordcount as I wasn’t sure there would be much I could cut without losing story content, but I’m actually finding it a lot easier and more satisfying than expected. I should have a pitchable manuscript by the end of the month at this rate.

I also tried out the slow cooker that Geth and I won in the raffle at Slimming World last week. I made curry, and it was delicious. I’m going to leave it for an extra hour or so next time, though, as the potatoes weren’t quite as done as I would have liked.

More editing work to do tomorrow – both for clients and for myself.
