PBs and hibernation

Unusually, this morning’s parkrun went exactly as planned!  This is because I’d intended all week to have Geth pace me to sub-30, ’cause he’d offered last weekend after I got tantalisingly close again.  My cold threw a bit of a spanner in the works in terms of training this week, as it meant I had to skip my midweek long run, but I’m feeling a bit better now and so had no problems keeping up with Geth round the course today.  The result was a 29:45 parkrun, a forty-second PB and more importantly my first ever sub-30!  This is a real milestone, as it means I finally feel like I’m no longer a slow runner and am instead a solid mid-packer.  Just have to get more training in so I can start translating it to longer distances!

We had a relaxing afternoon hibernating with more Final Fantasy IX – which is our now-traditional way to spend autumn and winter Saturday afternoons and made me feel really cosy and autumnal – before enjoying the first of the Strictly live shows.  I’m still voting for Danny John-Jules, but most of the contestants are really good this year so it’s going to be an interesting series!

Autumn cooking

Still quiet workwise, so it’s been a day spent batch-cooking and catching up with radio shows.  Very relaxing!

After the summer, which is always chaotic and hence bad for my diet, I like to spend the autumn getting properly back on plan and into routine.  I usually have this absolutely down by mid-December, at which point everything gets flipped up in the air for Christmas.  Such is life.  As part of this, I’ve decided to carve out time once a week to batch-cook my lunches, which means I will remember to eat properly at lunchtime rather than just grabbing a bit of fruit, and hence am less likely to be tempted by high-syn snacks mid-afternoon.  Today I made a big batch of Mediterranean vegetable pasta (and have only just realised that I’ve never posted the recipe for that.  Will rectify soon!), which will do nicely for this week.  I also made lasagne for tonight’s tea, which is enough for two nights, so I don’t have to do any cooking tomorrow.  Not struggling for pasta meals at the moment!

I also caught up with a couple of Top 40 chart shows – I’m a few weeks behind at the moment – so by next week’s chart review I will have a lot to say about all the new hits of the last month or so.

2018 Ciders #51: Symonds

Back in the UK for more ciders!

I arrived back home to find that our local pub had changed its regular draught cider from Stowford Press to Symonds, due to deals with manufacturers and stuff.  I am not very happy about this, because Stowford Press is one of my favourite ciders, and Symonds is…not.  It’s too dry for me, and I find it pretty tasteless.

What this means is that I’m tempted to start frequenting other local pubs instead.  Hopefully some of them will have some tastier ciders for me!

Promises of a quiet autumn

A nice quiet Thursday, bookended by Slimming World and Pilates as usual.  Got some reading caught up with as well!

Now spending another evening upstairs watching Geth play Final Fantasy IX.  I’ve got the feeling this is going to be the pattern for a couple of weeks.

On with the week off…and some thoughts about my hearing aids

Another fairly relaxed day.  I went out to get my hair cut, and I’m amazed my new hair still looks okay after coming back through the gale force winds that were blowing this afternoon.  You can’t beat that magical salon hairspray.

I also took a detour to the hospital to pick up some hearing aid batteries.  I’ve worn hearing aids since 2002 but only got digital ones in 2016 (it was a huge, huge saga, mainly due to the fact that NHS Scotland and NHS England will not communicate with each other, so I basically had to go through over a year of tests before I could have new ones after my old analogue one broke.  It was a very deaf time).  The digital ones are great, but they eat a lot of batteries – and when the battery is getting low it makes a horrible doom-laden clanging sound (this usually happens when I am not in a position to be able to change the battery, like when I’m in a music venue watching a band, or in the middle of a 10K race), so you can’t really eke them out right to the end of their lives.

I also find it funny when I think about my hearing aids compared to my glasses – if you think about it, they perform the same function (sensory aids), but I don’t know anyone these days who goes through the NHS for glasses (I presume NHS glasses must still be available?  I wonder if they’re still the uniform thick-framed things that people associate with the term ‘NHS glasses’?), yet it’s still standard for hearing aids, and so the latter feel so much more medicalised.  I can’t ever imagine high-end designer labels doing lines of hearing aids either, or listing them as an accessory when I do my OOTD photos!  Glasses are considered fashion, whereas hearing aids are seen as technology, and I don’t see that changing any time soon.

Still, I will never take hearing aid technology for granted – I really appreciate it on haircut days, because I need to take my aids out (and my glasses off if I’ve not been organised enough to wear contacts, which is usually the case), and trying to hear what the hairdressers are saying is tough, even if I’ve asked them to speak up.

Glasses and hearing aids
It’s nice to be alive in a time when such things are possible. I don’t think I could have pulled off an ear horn.

Hearing aids thoroughly back in place, I’m spending another evening watching Geth playing Final Fantasy IX.  Great story so far!

Final Fantasy IX
Nice to see some old-school turn-based combat too.

2018 Ciders #50: Waupoos Premium

It’s the last cider from Canada, and the fiftieth different cider I’ve drunk this year!  I had this one on the 23rd of July, so I suppose it’s possible I might get to a hundred different ones for 2018.  We’ll see!

Waupoos Premium
Waupoos Premium.

You can see the logo better on the official website.

Waupoos is a nice dry cider with a lovely strength to it.  I’d had this one the previous time we visited Toronto, in 2016, so it was nice to see it again!

A proper day off

No real work today except email admin, and no house stuff except a quick sort-out of the TV and PS2 setup in the bedroom so Geth could get on with his Final Fantasy IX playthrough:

TV, PS2 and games
Geth is very happy to have this setup back.

It’s been a very relaxing day!  I am now thoroughly enjoying watching Geth play the opening section of the aforementioned game.  Gameplay-wise it looks very similar to FFVII and FFVIII, the other two PS1-era entries.

A non-sick day

I’m not feeling too hot at the moment.  The bad cough I had over the weekend has turned into a full-blown cold, and so I feel shaky, drained of energy and generally rubbish.  I’m also ravenously hungry all the time, for some reason, which is not helping me stay on plan SW-wise.

Unfortunately, freelancers don’t get sick days, so I had to work today!  At least I got to do it from the comfort of my own sofa, wearing a giant cosy jumper and putting my feet up, so it’s not all bad.

A catchup of the weekend’s outfits:
