A more chilled-out Saturday

I ran to the supermarket today…

…and even having done the parkrun quiz at 9am, I was still able to get my run done really promptly and so had the whole afternoon for getting on with my text adventure game. It’s such an enjoyable project to be working on, and my latest installment is really starting to come together! I’ll be stretching my (rather weak) art muscles over the next few days in order to create some graphics for it.

I really hope I’ll be able to wake up nice and early tomorrow too, as I’ve felt so much better for it today!

Gran Canaria, 2000
Another holiday snap – this one’s from Gran Canaria, twenty years ago this month. I’d love to go back to the Canary Islands sometime, especially the more out-of-the-way islands.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Tones & I – ‘Dance Monkey’
Mø – ‘Final Song’
Bill Withers – ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’*

*RIP Bill. This song has always been one of my favourites.

Still oversleeping

I just went out for a mile this morning…

…because I slept late again and I had quite a lot of day job work to do today, so there wasn’t much time left for running. I had hoped that my sleep pattern might have returned to normal by now, but my body decided it needed nine and a half hours last night. Geth and I are setting an alarm so we can do the online parkrun quiz at 9am tomorrow morning, so hopefully that will help with the sleep issue.

I’ll try and get a small amount of work done on my text adventure game (I find it’s better to keep a daily streak going for Camp NaNo even if it’s just a few words), and then return to my 3DS this evening.

Next door's cat
The spring weather has resulted in the gravel in our back garden getting warmer, which has in turn resulted in next door’s cat remembering that it’s a good place to sit down and have a wash.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Koichi Sugiyama – ‘Village Hidden In A Mountain’
Traditional – ‘The Music Man’
Carly Rae Jepsen – ‘Call Me Maybe’
Fleetwood Mac – ‘The Chain’

Spring-ish

A very blustery run this morning…

…which I was a little surprised by, as I’d hoped we’d be done with the strong winds by now (the nice spring weather we’ve been lucky enough to have for the last couple of weeks has been a real silver lining for me, as it really helps to lift my mood when I get out for my run in the morning). It certainly made the run a bit more of a challenge! Hopefully it’ll be calmer again tomorrow.

I slept a lot better last night. I think the secondary evening workout is helping (I tried some YouTube yoga last night – it’s basically very similar to Pilates with lots of hippy talk thrown in. It was a nice workout though so I will persevere), and before bed I also did a bit of reading – I picked up the book I’d abandoned last autumn, on Mum’s suggestion. Fingers crossed that will be my pattern sorted again now.

I’ve done a bit of day job work this afternoon, and am now going to crack on with my text adventure/Camp NaNo project. The first game (a prequel to the main project) is nearly ready to playtest!

On the whole, I’m settling into my ‘new normal’ daily routine now, and I find I’m striking a good balance between work and me-time.

Spring blossom
A definite sign of spring: the blossom is opening on one of the trees in our front garden. I love spring blossom and these trees are one of my favourite things about the two gardens we acquired when we bought our house.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Revo – ‘Battle Normal 1 [Bravely Default II Soundtrack]’
Duran Duran – ‘Violence Of Summer (Love’s Taking Over)’
Endor – ‘Pump It Up’
The Beatles – ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’
The Beatles – ‘She Loves You’
Fountains Of Wayne – ‘Stacy’s Mom’*
Cast of Aladdin – ‘Prince Ali’

*RIP Adam Schlesinger.

Adjusting

Another enjoyable run this morning…

…which has cemented my decision to focus on enjoyment during runs rather than training goals for a while. It’s really helping during the current situation.

Geth and I finally managed to wake up at a reasonable time this morning, though that was mainly because we’d both been having nightmares all night. So, um, yay?

As such, I’ve felt much more in control of my time today and have managed to get all my day job work done fairly promptly. I can now get on with today’s work on my text adventure game – I’m doing it as my project for April’s Camp NaNoWriMo, which provides an extra bit of daily motivation.

I’m also looking forward to the evening – I’m going to have a go at some YouTube yoga and then relax with my 3DS.

The weeping willow in our garden is coming along nicely and developing lots of baby leaves.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Hiroki Morishita – ‘Just Across This Mountain And We’ll Arrive Soon’
Ludwig van Beethoven – ‘The Pastoral Symphony’
The Weeknd – ‘Blinding Lights’
Revo – ‘Battle Normal 1 [Bravely Default II Soundtrack]’
Ashbury Heights – ‘Die By Numbers’
Duran Duran – ‘White Lines’

Refocusing

I did my most enjoyable run in ages this morning…

…because I ran where I wanted to run and as far as I wanted to run, instead of just doing what was scheduled on the plan. I’ve decided to throw the plan out of the window for a couple of weeks and just focus on running every day in a way I enjoy – that seems to be what’s best for my mental health at the moment. It’s been really hard to get out of my marathon training mindset, and I think I need to let go of plans and schedules and ‘training’ for a while.

Geth and I are still really struggling with having lost an hour at the weekend, and have not adjusted at all yet. As such, we are both feeling very sluggish this week – unable to wake up at the proper time and then tossing and turning (and worrying) at night because it takes so long to get to sleep. Today is the start of a new habit of ‘secondary exercise’ – because we’re not doing our usual amount of walking, we’re losing out on a lot of exercise, so we’re going to get back into RingFit Adventure some evenings, and I’m going to try out some YouTube yoga and things as well. I’m hoping that this, combined with the running, will wear me out enough that I’ll be able to get to sleep at a reasonable time!

The afternoon has mostly been admin, but I’ve got a bit of day job work to keep me occupied for the rest of the week, and I’m really enjoying my adventure game project as well. I finally finished the Bravely Default II demo last night, but I’ve got what feels like infinite videogames still to play!

France, 1989
Another old holiday picture today – this time of me and Mum in France, July 1989. I’ve not been to France for nearly five years – Geth and I were hoping for a city break in Paris this autumn, but with all our spring events being postponed to September and October, I don’t think we can make any new plans until 2021 now.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Mike Harding and Myfanwy Talog – ‘DangerMouse Main Theme’
Revo – ‘Town 1 [Bravely Default II Soundtrack]’
Duran Duran – ‘Violence Of Summer (Love’s Taking Over)’
Duran Duran – ‘Femme Fatale’
Revo – ‘Battle Normal 1 [Bravely Default II Soundtrack]’
Ashbury Heights – ‘Die By Numbers’
Alvin & The Chipmunks – ‘We’re The Chipmunks’
Matthew Wilder – ‘Break My Stride’
Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé – ‘Barcelona’

A working weekend

A brass band and a narrowly-missed target featured at this morning’s parkrun…

…and then I spent the afternoon doing day job work (a client has an urgent deadline so I did some weekend hours today) with the British Indoor Athletics Championship on in the background.

Now having a quiet evening in order to rest before tomorrow’s long run… and I distinctly remember saying something similar last week, and probably the week before. Marathon training does tend to result in some particularly un-rock-‘n’-roll weekends, even by my standards! Early nights all round 🙂

Slashed leopardprint leggings
I also got a long-neglected sewing project done today. I’m guessing these leggings will be a bit too big nowadays but hopefully they’ll also be comfy after tomorrow’s run!

Today’s earworm playlist:

Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber – ‘I Don’t Care’
George Ezra – ‘Paradise’
Alanis Morissette – ‘Hand In My Pocket’

Sunday pottering about…and sleeping, possibly

The in-laws have headed off now, so I’m having a quiet Sunday afternoon getting on with a bit of writing and adventure game coding. Hoping to get some gaming in this evening as well!

I’m still finding I’m very drowsy, but hopefully another good night of sleep will sort that out. Back to work tomorrow.

Nintendo Game Boy
Not an OOTD: there was lots of retro gaming on the Switch this weekend, which reminded me that I’ve been needing to superglue my old Game Boy screen back on for years now! Finally got round to it yesterday. All of the cartridges still work, except Wario Land – but curiously enough, Wario Land still works in my Game Boy Colour, just not the Game Boy Original…but the Original is fine with all the other cartridges…strange. Still, at least they all still play in one machine or another (and if they didn’t, I could redownload them on my 3DS for a couple of quid, so there’s that).

Today’s earworm playlist:

Whitney Houston – ‘Saving All My Love For You’
Duran Duran – ‘Electric Barbarella’
Duran Duran – ‘Winter Marches On’
Little Mix – ‘Black Magic’
Koji Kondo – ‘Super Mario Bros. Theme’
Roxy Music – ‘2HB’
Rockwell – ‘Somebody’s Watching Me’

Half asleep

Not doing very well in terms of staying awake today! I’ve had two giant glasses of Pepsi Max and three coffees and I still can’t keep my eyes open. It’s probably partly because I had to get up for parkrun this morning … but I wasn’t THAT late last night. Hopefully I’ll perk up a bit this evening!

Geth’s folks are visiting at the moment, and they’ve all gone into town to go shopping, so I’m sitting on the sofa trying not to snooze. It is most definitely hibernation season now.

Glass of cola
Not an OOTD: I’m not sure how much more of this I’m going to have to drink in order to stay awake!

Today’s earworm playlist:

The Midnight – ‘Shadows In The City’
Georgia – ‘About Work The Dancefloor’
Ollie Wride – ‘Back To Life’
Faderhead – ‘Dancers’
Koji Kondo – ‘Super Mario Bros. Theme’

And a bonus track that Geth was humming earlier:

Norman Greenbaum – ‘Spirit In The Sky’

Life without alcohol: nine months sober

Three-quarters of a year sober today. For most of my life, that would have seemed utterly impossible.

Autumn trees

Every month, it becomes marginally easier, and marginally more normal. I still think about drinking a lot, and every time I plan a night out, my first instinctive thought is that I will be drinking, before I remember that I don’t anymore. It’s just one of the many ways in which I haven’t managed to detach my brain from drinking culture yet – for instance, I still automatically assume that I’ll have to wait a while before I set off if I’m planning to drive in the morning (despite the fact that I only properly got back into driving this year, after I got sober!) and when I’m offered a booze alternative like Nosecco or even ginger beer earlier in the day, my first instinct is that it’s a bit too early to start yet – when in actual fact, it would be perfectly fine to drink Nosecco all day long, as I would still be stone cold sober at midnight!

Drink is also showing up in my dreams a lot, usually in tandem with the strange reappearance of my recurring nightmares about my late cat, José, which have started happening a lot again after a few years of respite. As I expected, they usually take the form of ‘oops I forgot I was sober and had a drink’, similar to the ones I have about vegetarianism. Thankfully I’ve not recently dreamt about actually being drunk, which I always found to be a horrible dream even when I was still drinking.

I’ve reviewed one booze alternative this month:

I’ve got a slight backlog of booze alternatives to review, but hopefully I’ll catch up before the end of the year.

It’s been a very busy month and I’ve not really been looking after myself mental health-wise. I’ve already set a few things in place to make sure this is less of a problem throughout October.

Can I sleep yet?

Another hectic day today. I went for a walk to the supermarket first thing, and then came home to do a full day of editing work for clients. Now catching up with a few admin and writing jobs this evening.

Dragging myself to parkrun in the morning, and then Geth and I have boardgaming guests round to continue our Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle Earth campaign tomorrow afternoon! Hoping to get the bulk of the campaign finished so that we can start a more seasonally spooky game in October.

Sunday will be for sleeping. I hope!

Sleeping, September 1988
Not today’s OOTD: sleep, glorious sleep, on a gloriously ’80s grey leather sofa in a beautifully coordinated and comfortable blue ensemble.

Gary Numan – Cars
Duran Duran – Union Of The Snake
Peter Hames – Ordinary Man
Elton John – I’m Still Standing
