Weekend dozing plans

A very early four-miler in the rain this morning…

…because I woke up at six and couldn’t get back to sleep, so I thought I might as well go for my run. It was absolutely chucking it down and it took me about two hours afterwards to stop shivering (this process involved putting the fire on in August BECAUSE OF COURSE). It’s brightened up nicely since, so I kind of wish I’d slept longer… which is the opposite of my usual sleep frustration!

I was still a bit upset this morning about the ongoing postal issues detailed yesterday (as well as some other stuff I can’t mention here) but at least waking up early meant that I had a productive morning. I managed to get most things done for the day by mid-afternoon so that I could get in the weekend mood early. The weekend will involve a lot of videogames and hopefully a lot of sleep.

I’ll post my running vlogs as usual over the weekend, and will be back for another update on Monday.

Glow bracelet cape
The distinctly autumnal weather has me thinking about autumnal things. I doubt there will be Hallowe’en parties this year so I probably won’t need a costume, and I’m not sure I’ll ever better ‘Glow Bracelet Cape Superhero’ from 2014 anyway.

Today’s earworm playlist:

REM – ‘Losing My Religion’
Voltaire – ‘The Vampire Club’

Building stuff

Just a mile today…

…because I woke up late again. I need to set an alarm tomorrow as I’m falling behind with stuff a bit this week.

After my run, I spent pretty much the rest of the day building garden furniture. Geth ordered a set the other day and it arrived yesterday, so I put it all together this afternoon as we have guests (!) coming for lunch on Friday. It’s still meant to be very warm and dry by then, if a bit cloudy, so it’ll be nice to sit out in the fresh air.

No videogaming tonight as I have too much admin to catch up with. Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit easier time-wise… if I don’t sleep through that alarm.

Garden furniture
I really like this garden set. We also got a plastic cover for protecting it from the elements overnight (although next door’s cat has already sprayed on it… he really doesn’t like new-smelling furniture). Hopefully we’ll have a few more weeks of summer weather to enjoy sitting out.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Duran Duran – ‘Rio’
Ashford & Simpson – ‘Solid’

Weekend feels

Just my Friday mile this morning…

…and I wouldn’t have had time to run further even if it had been scheduled, because I woke up really late again. I’m still struggling with my sleep pattern and this week has been especially bad. I’m actually looking forward to the nights properly drawing in as we get into the autumn, as I think it’s the light evenings that are the problem – it’s still not really getting dark until about 10pm here, and so my brain still thinks it’s daytime when I go to bed.

I’ve had a good day otherwise though. I’m enjoying the short game I’m making so much that I’m going to be working on it over the weekend, and then I’ll take Monday as a day for videogaming like I did during this last week. Geth and I are also planning to drive to Asda to do the weekend shop this evening, so we’ll be well stocked up for the next few days.

I was thrilled yesterday to find out that my most recent published game, One Last Thing…, had taken first place in the Adventuron Next Adventure Jam 😀 I worked really hard on the game and I’m so pleased that people enjoyed it. I need to do one more bugfix update, which I’ll release either tonight or tomorrow, and then I should be able to leave it alone for a while as I work on other projects.

Hopefully I’ll be able to regale you all with tales of weekend coding when I return to the blog on Monday! Until then, I’ll just be posting a couple of weekend running vlogs as usual.

Jam result
First out of seven entries is pretty good! Already looking forward to the next jam.

Rebecca Black – ‘Friday’

All set

I got up early(ish) to do another mile this morning…

…because I had a very exciting appointment at the hairdresser, which I posted about here. I then spent the afternoon finishing off my day job work so that I’ve got a clean slate for next week and can properly enjoy the weekend in the meantime! I have so many games to play – my copy of Paper Mario: The Origami King arrived today, Beyond A Steel Sky (which I have been excited about for years) was released on Steam yesterday, and a couple of new Adventuron games have dropped in the last couple of days (one of which is in Spanish, so I will have to dust off my rusty linguistic skills).

I’m normally very strict about sleeping naturally but it has not been serving me well in terms of waking time recently, so I will set a couple of reasonably-timed alarms over the weekend in the hope that I will be able to get up, get my running and admin out of the way, and settle down to some gaming time.

I’ll post my running vlogs over the weekend as usual, but unless I get excited enough about one of the games I’m playing that I need to blog about it, don’t expect to hear anything else from me until Monday!

Geth mowing the lawn
Geth braved the garden today after multiple weekends on the bounce of it being ‘too wet for mowing’. It was apparently a haunting jungle experience and he will be making the effort to do it once a week from now on!

Today’s earworm playlist:

Manami Kiyota – ‘Satorl Marsh’
Nobuo Uematsu – ‘Temple Of Chaos’

Bonus hours

A slightly out-of-pattern day today. First of all, I was up at six, which is extremely rare for me – I’m (a) a self-employed person who sets her own hours and (b) not a morning person. However, Geth had an early hospital appointment for a sleep-deprived EEG, meaning he’d had to stay awake all night, and so I was up and about early so that I could drive him to the hospital and back.

This meant that I didn’t go for my run until we got back…

…although the hospital appointment had been so early that I still managed to get out for the run about half an hour earlier than I did yesterday!

I’ve spent the rest of the day doing day job work and a bit of coding for a fun side project game. The plan is for the same again tomorrow… and then the new Paper Mario game will be showing up in the post, which is my weekend sorted 🙂

I’ve also got a hairdresser appointment tomorrow morning, for the first time since Christmas. It’ll all be very masked and sterile, but I’m so looking forward to having my lockdown hair sorted out!

Adventuron blank screen
A blank screen in the Adventuron editor, ready to code. I’ll see a few of these over the next few weeks as I have a lot of short, fun games planned for the rest of the summer.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Jennifer Lopez – ‘Louboutins’
Nobuo Uematsu – ‘Temple Of Chaos’
The Beatles – ‘Drive My Car’
Beach Boys – ‘Sloop John B’

Late days

Not my planned run today…

…so I just did a mile. Feeling very unmotivated at the moment, largely due to waking up late every morning. If I don’t get out for my planned longer runs until after half past ten then I can’t really get started with my day until early to mid-afternoon. However, I have to be up at seven tomorrow morning as I’m driving Geth to a hospital appointment, so hopefully that will jolt my sleeping pattern back to what it should be. We’ll see.

Other than my short run, I’ve just been getting on with day job work, admin and writing, as usual. The rest of the week will be a bit busier because of various appointments, but hopefully I’ll still manage to get a few things done.

realMyst: Masterpiece Edition
I finished realMyst: Masterpiece Edition on the Switch last night, just in time for the new Paper Mario game to arrive this weekend. The bonus Age is short, but a nice addition to the game.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Nobuo Uematsu – ‘Town’
Nobuo Uematsu – ‘Main Theme’
Dire Straits – ‘Walk Of Life’

Working girl

Managed to squeeze my mile in today…

…but it had to be quick, as I was very busy today with some day job work. I’m always grateful for day job work in the current circumstances though! There was a scary period early on in lockdown when nothing was coming in at all, and all the clients who’d been making enquiries pre-COVID seemed to have disappeared, and I was starting to panic a bit. Over the last couple of months, though, the trickle of work has become a bit steadier, which I’m really happy about. Hopefully academia in general has become a bit more settled down, and people will have written more stuff for me to edit over the summer.

Just getting on with some admin this evening. I’ve been sleeping late the last few days, so I need to set an alarm tomorrow – not for the crack of dawn or anything, but just an extra couple of hours tomorrow would be really helpful.

Misty path
Another moody shot from Sunday’s run.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Duran Duran – ‘Late Bar’
Duran Duran – ‘Hungry Like The Wolf’

Bigger mornings

I did another three miles today…

…and was still back home well before nine because I woke up about seven this morning. That doesn’t usually happen, as I place a lot of importance on natural sleep patterns (I’m aware that this is a privilege resulting from being in charge of my own work hours!) and mine tend to favour the hours between one and nine. The extra couple of waking hours have made a huge difference and I’ve managed to get a lot more achieved today!

My prep for my next game is going well. I’ve made a mini-game in Adventuron that I’m going to try porting today to see if I can get it working on a Spectrum emulator. That should give me a better idea of any issues that I’m going to need to look out for when doing the same process with the main jam game later in the month.

I’m also quite excited about the weekend – it looks like I’ll have a bit of time to get back to playing videogames as well as making them! Fingers crossed.

Running vlogs and review posts as usual over the weekend, and I’ll update again on Monday.

Batman: Arkham Knight
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na BATMAN. Arkham Knight was one of the reasons I built a gaming PC five years ago… yet I never got round to buying it, largely because I never got round to finishing all the previous Arkham games on the XBOX 360! However, Geth is fairly certain that he wants to get an XBOX Series X (which will be backwards-compatible with XBOX One), and the XBOX One version is now a fraction of the price that it was on release, soooo… I may be starting an Arkham marathon again soon!

Today’s earworm playlist:

Hiroyuki Sawano and Gemie – ‘Ashes Suite’
Little Mix – ‘Move’
The Shamen – ‘Ebeneezer Goode’
Tom Jones – ‘It’s Not Unusual’

Suddenly summer

Back to the intervals today…

…because Geth wants to start doing intervals, so he came running with me this morning to observe how they work. I only did half the number of sets I was doing a few weeks ago though!

It’s not been a great day. I had an absolutely terrible night’s sleep last night – partly due to the muggy heat and partly due to ongoing stress – and then we had some bad news this afternoon. I had hoped to get some work done on my next adventure game today, but there have just been too many distractions. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to lose myself in it a bit.

On the plus side, we did go for a walk in the glorious warm sunshine, largely because we needed to get out of the house. Spring has felt a bit sudden this year due to the lockdown; the world has been on hold, but obviously the seasons haven’t. I’m looking forward to doing a lot of walking over the summer, even if we can’t do much else.

Ukulele collection
My ukulele family has expanded this week, thanks to a generous gift from Dad! Looking forward to having a good strum over the weekend.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Ollie Wride – ‘Back To Life’
Daniel Bedingfield – ‘If You’re Not The One’

Still not firing on all cylinders

Just another mile today…

…as I woke up with a slightly sore shoulder (I had planned to do closer to two miles today but decided to keep it short and gentle again).

I’m still not sleeping well, and I don’t feel productive at all this week – I’m a bit slow to get going with everything. Still, I’m managing to get a bit of work on my current writing project done every day, which is great.

Despite the uncertainty about absolutely everything at the moment, I am 100% certain that two things will be the case by the end of 2020:

  1. I will have made a significant dent in my videogame backlog. There’s no way I’ll have cleared it completely, but there will at least be light at the end of the tunnel…
  2. I will own enough leggings to last me for the rest of my life, and yet I will still want more. So many shiny patterns!

Everyone needs a hobby, or twenty in my case. Especially at the moment.

Videogaming tonight, running in the morning, writing during the day, rinse and repeat.

Computers, 1980
I’m running out of pictures that I can take during lockdown, as my world is obviously a bit samey right now. As such, I’ve been going through the family archives for old computer pictures. I love this one from 1980.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Billy Idol – ‘Rebel Yell’
Revo – ‘Ship Upon The Open Skies’
Thought Beings – ‘Shakedown’
