Semi-flying Saturday post

Just a quick post today as I’ve been very busy! Will update properly over the next few days.

*One of my own compositions, a chilled-out EBM number from circa 2013, which has only ever existed in my head.

**Another of my own compositions, a campfire-style song from circa 1998, which again has only ever existed in my head. I’ve not had any of my own daft musical attempts as earworms for years, and suddenly two of them come along on the same day. Rather like buses, appropriately enough.

Final edit

I finished editing down that book draft today! I am so looking forward to working on everything EXCEPT said book from next week onwards. I didn’t quite get the pitch sorted, but that will be the first thing I do on Monday.

Now to spend the evening relaxing and getting a few things ready for the weekend.

OOTD 8th March 2019
OOTD: ‘finishing the edit’ celebratory outfit! Cardigan Primark (2016), t-shirt Gildan for Preverse (2015, modified 2018), skirt The Only 1 Clothes Company (1997), tights Pretty Polly (2018), shoes Office (2018).

A slightly off-kilter Thursday

I did my speed run and went to Slimming World as usual this morning (and got some editing done for a client inbetween), but my Pilates class was an hour earlier than usual (which is going to be the case for the whole of the current course), so I didn’t have as much getting-stuff-done time in the afternoon as I’m used to. I’ve shifted everything to the evening instead, which makes sense as Geth’s out boardgaming tonight, but I need to have a think about organising Thursdays a bit better for the next few weeks.

Looking forward to a quieter day tomorrow, and to finally getting my book draft finished and submitted!

OOTD 7th March 2019

Phone Box Thursday: River Street, Mevagissey

This is another phone box that Mum and Dad spotted while out on their travels.

Red phone box
Red phone box, River Street, Mevagissey, 13th September 2018.

(Coordinates 50°27’02.4″N, 4°78’79.7″W.)

This is another good example of the ‘two-for-one’ phone box and postbox combo. It’s also got one of those ’00s updates that gave phone boxes basic email functionality, making it marginally more useful for the 21st century.

Buried in books

It’s been a fairly relaxed day – I got a bit more editing done on my book draft (so nearly there now!) and have been looking into online resources to help with sobriety and mental health (I mentioned this in my two-month sobriety update yesterday).

Now looking forward to a chilled-out evening of reading before the usual hectic Thursday tomorrow.

Booze Alternative: Pret A Manger Ginger Beer

It’s yet another ginger beer! We first found these in the Pret A Manger at Leeds train station, and Geth has been bringing them back for me from town ever since.

Pret A Manger Ginger Beer
Pret A Manger Ginger Beer.

This one is gorgeously sweet – probably the sweetest of the ginger beers I’ve tried so far. It does make me cough a bit with its spiciness, but it’s a lovely taste overall.

Ready to eat all the pancakes!

A bit of a day off today, which has been nice. I did my Tuesday morning recovery run, went to the hairdresser, and then did a few things in town.

Pancakes and boardgaming with Geth tonight, and then back to the editing tomorrow!

OOTD 5th March 2019
OOTD: my fringe only ever looks like this on hairdresser days! Scarf unknown brand (2015), top Cyberdog (2008), jeans Levi (2018), boots Moda In Pelle (2018).

Life without alcohol update: two months sober

Two months sober today. This is easily the longest period of time I’ve spent without a drop of alcohol since…well, probably since I was a small child. It’s been a strange month since my last sobriety update.

Daffodil

Early sobriety is a bit of a confusing rollercoaster, and I’ve found that if I don’t keep myself busy, I spend a lot of time reflecting and just turning things over in my brain. I also spend a lot of time thinking about drink, which is why I’ve been trying so hard to keep my brain occupied by getting on with work. Unfortunately, spending every waking hour working has been playing havoc with my stress levels, and so this week I’ve had to dial it back so I can try and relax in the evenings. I’ve not been very successful so far, but it has meant my brain’s not still racing when I go to bed, which is probably a good thing.

Sleep-wise, I’m not getting the bizarre vivid dreams every single night anymore, but they are still showing up occasionally. On the whole, though, I’m sleeping better than I ever have in my life. I go to bed at half past ten, read for half an hour or so, drop off as soon as my head hits the pillow, and tend to wake up naturally about ten minutes before my alarm goes off at seven. I only ever feel tired in a kind of satisfying way, after going for a long run.

I’ve reviewed a few more booze alternatives over the last month:

I’m still finding them a good alternative for that Friday ‘celebratory’ feeling, but the novelty of trying different things is starting to wear off a bit. I’ve found the second month to be tougher than the first in terms of cravings for alcohol, strangely.

On the whole, I’m finding it a bit difficult with everything churning over in my brain all the time, which is also making the process feel kind of insular and lonely. As such, I’m currently finding various strategies for feeling a bit less like I’m on my own with this thing – I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts on the subject, I’ve put a few recommended books on my Amazon wishlist, and I’m tentatively exploring online and offline community options. All of this is going to be a real focus over the next month, along with my mental health in general.

I want to say a huge ‘thanks’ to everyone who has got in touch over the last couple of months with messages of support, helpful suggestions, and links to resources. I appreciate it more than I can express.

Video edit

Back to the editing today – mostly for clients, but I’ve also had time to do a bit of my own work as well. I really can see the end in sight now for this book draft!

I also got our DVD shelves tidied up and have identified a few to sell through Music Magpie, which is a fairly minor house job but still the first house job I’ve managed to get done in months and months.

Looking forward to getting some reading done this evening.

OOTD 4th March 2019
OOTD: blue Monday. Scarf unknown brand (vintage 1970s/1980s, thrifted from Anne out of Granny Bessie’s collection 1995), top Gildan for Infest (2015), skirt Primark (2018), tights Primark (2017), shoes Zara (2018).

Today’s earworm playlist:

The Bangles – Hazy Shade Of Winter
Duran Duran – Girls On Film
Billie Eilish – Bury A Friend
Calvin Harris and Rag ‘N’ Bone Man – Giant
Kaiser Chiefs – Oh My God
Mabel – Don’t Call Me Up
Duran Duran – A View To A Kill
Duran Duran – Burning The Ground
The Prodigy – Out Of Space*
Iggy Pop – Lust For Life

*RIP Keith Flint. Really sad about this one! I was lucky enough to see the Prodigy twice, once at T in the Park 2005 and once at M’era Luna 2009. Amazing shows – the way they always got the crowd involved was incredible.

Music Video Monday: recent chart catchup

More videos for recent chart hits that have only recently been released!

J Cole – Middle Child

Some interesting dark imagery in this one. There is a bit of ‘standing around next to a car’, but I’ll forgive it because the car is covered in mud so it’s more of an artistic thing.

Little Mix and Ty Dolla Sign – Think About Us

The nice thing about Little Mix videos is that they’re always really pretty – pretty outfits, pretty imagery. This one has lots of butterflies and snow. Good stuff.

Cardi B and Bruno Mars – Please Me

I like the retro diner setting and the costumes (Cardi B’s hair is awesome!) but I’m not really into the NSFW dancing. I think I’m getting old. I do like the subtle homage to the video for Michael Jackson’s The Way You Make Me Feel though.

More music videos next week!
