Gradually sorting the house out

The usual mile today…

…which is getting a bit samey on the vlog, so I’ve decided to move forward with something I was going to do at the start of January 2021: move my running vlog to weekly rather than daily. This will enable me to do a more interesting roundup rather than saying the same things every day! First ‘weekly’ vlog will appear on Sunday.

I’m still getting on with my house decluttering project. I’m not managing to get rid of an awful lot of stuff because due to dumps and charity shops not currently being open, I’ve got nowhere to take it. However, I am managing to organise the hoard into a more workable mass, will have a more usable house once I’m done, and will be able to work on the de-hoarding again in my own time after Christmas.

Looking forward to getting more of this done over the weekend! I’ll update again on Monday.

Star Wars Holiday Special
This evening’s pre-Christmas viewing: the original Star Wars Holiday Special. We watched the new Lego one too!

Today’s earworm playlist:

Traditional – ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’
Duran Duran – ‘Friends Of Mine’

Parallel universes

Another Wednesday interval session today…

…which was tough, but I’m kind of enjoying them in a slightly masochistic way. It was Geth’s turn to brave Sainsbury’s today, so I was able to focus on my run.

I then spent the afternoon finishing off a paper for a client, and am now weighing up options for the next few days’ entertainment. Disney Plus launched in the UK this week, which has been good timing in retrospect. Geth bought a year’s worth of subscription yesterday and put on Aladdin and The Sword in the Stone last night, which sparked a lot of fuzzy childhood memories. It also means we can watch the latest Star Wars TV series, which I expect we’ll be doing over the next week.

In the parallel universe where coronavirus didn’t happen, I had to make a decision about whether I was going to be spending tonight at the poetry night or at my ukulele class end-of-term concert (it would have been the concert, as that only happens three times per year – and for unrelated reasons was probably going to be the last one ever – but that’s all academic now). While the decision has been taken out of my hands, the poetry night is doing a Facebook Live event this evening, so I’ll have a nosey at that.

I’ll also be poking my head into the videogame world this evening – both playing them, and having a think about the next one I’m making…

Interval splits
Some of my best interval splits from this morning’s workout (I know this is a real ‘running bore’ picture but being in the house limits my photography ideas!).

Today’s earworm playlist:

Koichi Sugiyama – ‘Unflinchable Courage’
Toto – ‘Africa’
Cast of Aladdin – ‘Arabian Nights’
Bill Conti – ‘Gonna Fly Now’

In town for the day

Geth and I have been out and about all day. We headed to Slimming World weigh-in first of all to assess the damage from the last few weeks (mine wasn’t as bad as I’d expected – still need to be careful during Christmas though).

Next up was some last-minute Christmas shopping in town. I think that really is the Christmas shopping finished now! I certainly don’t want to have to go back into the centre of town again – it was far too busy for comfort today.

After that, we went to see the new Star Wars film, The Rise Of Skywalker. I really, really enjoyed it (despite a few annoying plot points) and will be posting a proper review in the next few days. We then headed to Pizza Hut for a debrief!

Back home now. I’m having my hair done tomorrow, but otherwise I’ll be staying inside in the warmth.

Star Wars 2020 calendar
Not an OOTD: Geth found this fantastic Star Wars calendar for next year!

Today’s earworm playlist:

Bing Crosby – ‘Silver Bells’
Elton John – ‘Step Into Christmas’
Chris Rea – ‘Driving Home For Christmas’
Tony Deans – ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’
The Cardigans – ‘Lovefool’
Carl Doy – ‘A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square’

And a bonus track that Geth was humming earlier:

The White Stripes – ‘Seven Nation Army’

Avoiding the ice rink

It’s been a fairly relaxed day, which has meant I’ve been able to get on with things in the house. I did head out to the shops to pick up some more Christmas supplies, but it’s absolutely freezing out there so I’ve stayed in otherwise!

Geth is watching all the Star Wars films in preparation for seeing the new one tomorrow, so that’s been good background noise today.

The Bingi Burra Stone
Not an OOTD: Dad is installing various old systems on computers at the moment, so I’ve dug out my copy of The Bingi Burra Stone to take with me when I visit for Christmas. Grandad had this game in the mid-’90s but I’ve not been able to get it to work on any emulators or old Windows installs on modern machines. Maybe this time we’ll get lucky!

Today’s earworm playlist:

Duran Duran – ‘The Edge Of America’
Wham! – ‘Wham! Rap (Enjoy What You Do)’
The Champs – ‘Tequila’
The Boomtown Rats – ‘I Don’t Like Mondays’
Tim Minchin – ‘White Wine In The Sun’
And One – ‘Panzermensch’

Christmas shopping done!… nearly

Geth and I went to finish off our Christmas shopping today. We are now about 97% done! Just a few more things to pick up over the next week.

We did also end up getting a couple of things for ourselves that just so happened to be in the shops in bargainous form. I was planning to get a new handbag in January but I spotted a very well-discounted one today, which came home with me! We also have a doormat for the back door, as Geth has been wanting one for a while.

A few days of Star Wars films (and lost of present-wrapping) await.

Jane Shilton handbag
Not an OOTD: this is going to be my regular day handbag for the foreseeable future!

Today’s earworm playlist:

Judy Garland – ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’
Taylor Swift – ‘Lover’
Basshunter – ‘All I Ever Wanted’
Queen – ‘Killer Queen’
Carl Doy – ‘The Way We Were’
Laura Branigan – ‘Gloria’
Cast of Mamma Mia! – ‘Honey Honey’
Elvis Costello – ‘Oliver’s Army’

And a bonus track that Geth was humming earlier:

Cast of Hairspray – ‘You Can’t Stop The Beat’

Pre-Christmas

I’ve had a relaxed day today doing pre-Christmas with the in-laws. It’s always nice to get the gift-exchanging started early! I’ve drunk a lot of nosecco (it still feels strange being able to drink as much of it as I like with no ill effects) and tried not to eat too much (these days I always end up craving fruit and so on over Christmas, as I start to feel a bit ill after too many mince pies etc.). Geth and I will be having a quiet week in between this weekend’s gathering and Christmas with my family (there will be a lot of Star Wars films watched in preparation for a couple of trips to see The Rise Of Skywalker).

Tomorrow should be another quiet day – Geth and I still have a bit of Christmas shopping to do, so I’m hoping to get it finished tomorrow afternoon.

Christmas cards and presents
Not an OOTD: the Christmas cards are stacking up now!

Today’s earworm playlist:

Pink – ‘A Million Dreams’
Sister Sledge – ‘We Are Family’
‘Korobeiniki’ (the Tetris theme music)

Film Review: Solo

Geth is a major Star Wars fan – it’s one of his main obsessions.  As such, for the release of all of the new Disney Star Wars films, we’ve gone out to see the film on release day so that he can watch the reviews on all his favourite Star Wars YouTube channels without getting spoilered.  The fact that we didn’t manage to do that with Solo – indeed, that it took us about six weeks to get around to seeing it – should tell you everything you need to know about how ridiculously busy life has been for us both recently.

Still, this last weekend, Geth has finally managed to celebrate his birthday properly – it was actually three weeks ago, but there just wasn’t space to do anything at the time – and as part of that, we managed to squeeze in a trip to the cinema on Friday afternoon.

I was slightly apprehensive about Solo, because I find recasting difficult – it really breaks my suspension of disbelief.  I’d been very happy with the effects in Rogue One where they’d digitally recreated the likenesses of Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher, but I do appreciate that you can’t really do that for the main character of a film.  Still, Alden Ehrenreich is a great actor, and while I didn’t feel that he echoed Harrison Ford’s performance in the same way that Ewan McGregor managed for Alec Guinness in the prequel trilogy, I did believe that it was the same character, and I didn’t really think about the change of actors while I was watching the film, which I think is all you can ask for, really.

The story was very enjoyable – it was a good rollicking action adventure, and the tension never let up.  There was a great moment with a surprise appearance from an old character you wouldn’t expect, though I would have thought it would be really confusing for people who only watch the films and not the animated TV series.  I expect I’ll hear more about that when Geth catches up with his YouTube watching.

My only real issue with the story was that, like Rogue One before it, there were a lot of character deaths.  I expected it from the start, and made sure not to get too attached to anyone, but I’m never a fan of killing off characters.  I find it to be cheap and lazy writing – there’s always a more interesting way that you can write characters out of a story – and I get frustrated when certain writers become known and lauded for regularly offing their creations, as if it’s clever or brave to do so.  It’s not.  I find it especially irritating when characters are basically introduced simply in order to die, and I felt that there were a couple of instances of that in Solo.

On the whole, though, I liked the film, and I’d give it a solid three out of five stars.  If we can arrange it before it stops being shown in cinemas, Geth and I will go see it once more with my dad (I have a tradition of going to see Star Wars films with Dad that dates back to The Phantom Menace!  I wasn’t born when the original trilogy came out, sadly) and then it will fade into the kind of film that I’ll be happy to semi-watch while doing something else once Geth has bought the Blu-Ray.
