Phone Box Thursday: City Square, Leeds

We’re still in Leeds town centre, and today we’re looking at a rather handsome row of four red phone boxes in City Square.

Each of the phone boxes is very well preserved, so clearly Leeds city council have put some work into these ones.

The four phone boxes are all in good condition – no smashed windows or graffiti here.

They frame the restaurant building very nicely!

Red phone boxes
Handy if you’re eating at the restaurant, need to make a phone call, and are so much of a 20th century throwback that you don’t have a mobile (I salute your dedication if so!)

Join us again next week for more Leeds phone boxes.

Update August 2022: added coordinates.

Phone Box Thursday: Call Lane, Leeds

We move on this week to a series of red phone boxes around Leeds town centre.

Um, ignore the banana skin.

I like to see phone boxes that have been turned into cash machines – it means they’re still useful in the 21st century and councils are less likely to get rid of them!

Update July 2022: added coordinates.

Update May 2024: it now has Asterix illustrations on the other side!

Phone Box Thursday: King Street West, Toronto

Today’s phone box is one that was exported across the Atlantic!  It stands outside the Elephant & Castle British-themed pub in Toronto, Canada.

This is how it looks from the top of the CN Tower:

It’s down there somewhere, I promise!

Can you spot it?

Back to the UK next week.

Update June 2022: added coordinates.

Update January 2026: still looking good!

Phone Box Thursday: Durham Railway Station, Durham

Today’s phone box is the one that stands on the platform at Durham railway station.

Living in the North East, I see this phone box a lot – every time I travel south by rail.  This is what it looks like from the train:

It’s nice to see it every time I go through Durham!

Phone Box Thursday: Grassmarket, Edinburgh

It’s the final one of the three red phone boxes that line the Grassmarket:

Like most phone boxes in the centre of Edinburgh, it’s mainly used as a useful advertising space for club nights and so on, but the box itself is still in good condition.

That’s us finally done with Edinburgh phone boxes on Burns Night 2016!  I’ll have something completely different for you next week.

Phone Box Thursday: Grassmarket, Edinburgh

It’s another phone box from the Grassmarket on that sunny January day in 2016.

It’s looking a little worse for wear with the smashed panels, but that’s fairly standard for phone boxes on boozy thoroughfares like the Grassmarket.  All in all, it’s doing pretty well.

From a different angle. It certainly was a nice day sunshine-wise!

More from the Grassmarket next week!

Update June 2022: added coordinates.

Phone Box Thursday: Grassmarket, Edinburgh

Today marks the first of a few Thursdays cataloguing the myriad phone boxes of the Grassmarket.

We’ll start with the one at the end of the street near where the gallows used to stand (see Wikipedia for info if you’re morbidly curious), which is accompanied by one of Edinburgh’s many police-boxes-that-have-been-turned-into-coffee-stands.

From a different angle. Fairly sunny for January!

It’s nice to see another part of the Old Town where the red phone boxes are still standing proud.  I suppose, compared to their surroundings, they’re practically brand new.

Update May 2022: added coordinates.  Accompanying police box still appears to be owned by the same café company!

Phone Box Thursday: George IV Bridge, Edinburgh

We’ve finally moved away from the Royal Mile (all the way to George IV Bridge round the corner!).  I’m sure you’re all relieved.

These ones are very nicely placed, opposite the Central Lending Library.  They’re also very near a bus stop, so you can admire them (or even make a quick old-fashioned phone call if you’re so inclined) while you’re waiting for the bus!

Bonus full-length shot:

As above!

Central Edinburgh is a beautiful setting for classic phone boxes (and for everything, really).  Stay tuned for more next week!
