Another Grassmarket revisit this week.
It was really nice to see some of these central Edinburgh phone boxes during the early stages of the marathon the other day!
An update to this post today.
Added coordinates and spent some time enjoying the Google Street View history (click the little clock in the top left corner) of this box – the police box next to the phone box has been about five different colours in the last five years (as it’s been taken over by various different companies), and the phone box itself now appears to be an art installation. I’ll try and take some updated photos when I’m next in Edinburgh!
Added coordinates today to the original post for another Edinburgh phone box – the one on the Royal Mile that is now a cash machine.
Gradually getting all the coordinates added in preparation for my phone box map project!
Revisiting one of my favourite phone boxes in Edinburgh today – the one on Waverley Bridge that’s been painted blue as a feature of the Wetherspoon beer garden. Here’s the original post.
While adding coordinates I realised that it has a very well-documented Street View timeline dating back to 2009. Apparently it was a beer garden feature even before Wetherspoon moved in!
One last phone box from Surrey Street just before the Sheffield half.
(Coordinates 53°38’05.1″N, 1°46’86.2″W.)
It was a bit difficult to get a picture of this one as they’d set up the line of pre-race portaloos next to it and so it was surrounded by queueing runners. I will most definitely be able to get a better picture if I go back on a day that’s not the Sheffield half.
Back to the archives next week unless I stumble across anything new!
This week’s phone box is across the road from last week’s phone box (closer to the green police box).
Clean and well-kept, as is the case with most city centre boxes. Looks like there’s still a phone inside too.
One more box from Surrey Street next week!
Here’s the second of the phone boxes I found en route to the Sheffield Half Marathon start line:
(Coordinates 53°38’07.5″N, 1°46’98.0″W.)
It’s one of several phone boxes lining this stretch of the city centre.
I have actually featured the Surrey Street boxes before, as Bill sent in a photo of the three of them a couple of years ago, but I’m doing new individual posts to feature my individual photos!
There’s also a bonus police box across the street…
Police boxes are normally outside the remit of my phone box posts – there are loads in Edinburgh, almost all of which have been turned into coffee kiosks, but I’ve never seen one outside Scotland before. Apparently they were green in South Yorkshire!
Another Surrey Street box next week.
Here’s the first of several phone boxes I found in Sheffield while waiting for Sunday’s race to start!
(Coordinates 53°38’14.8″N, 1°47’10.0″W.)
The door has been replaced since the Google Street View image was taken (and looks slightly misplaced within its frame). Phone is still intact though!
More from Sheffield next week.
