Flying Wednesday post

There have been a few too many flying posts recently – life has been pretty manic and I’ve not had much time for blogging. Things are finally starting to wind down a bit, however, and I’m looking forward to some time off.

Long run day tomorrow. Crossing everything that the pain mitigation tactics will work!

Light at the end of the tunnel

No pesto post again this week, sorry, there’s too much going on.

I’m very nearly (I think) done with my months-long busy work period! Even if I get the usual amount of Masters dissertations over the next month, it still won’t be anywhere near as hectic as it has been for the entire summer so far. One more day of work and then I can have a bit of a breather.

I’ve been going through a bit of a saga over the last few weeks with my feet really hurting on long runs. This has always been a thing but it’s got a lot worse recently (to the point that I can barely walk, let alone run) and I’m getting fed up. My next long run is Thursday and I’ve got a lot of strategies that I’m going to be using to try and mitigate the pain. I really hope they work, because marathon training has been a bit miserable so far with this going on.

Running shoes
The latest pair of ‘extra wide’ running shoes bought in an attempt to solve the problem. Unfortunately it is apparent that I need ‘extra extra wide’ running shoes, and they don’t make running shoes that wide. I also cannot justify buying any more running shoes (they’re expensive and I’ve bought a lot recently to try and solve this problem), so I’m going to have to think about some other solutions.

The next day or so will involve a lot of Googling for the best ways of applying moleskin tape! And work. Gotta finish the work.

Two jabs and done…

…well, unless or until they decide we all need booster vaccinations or similar. But for the moment, double jabbed and ergo as fully protected as possible.

COVID vaccination sticker
The staff at the centre I went to are no longer automatically giving out stickers for second vaccines (I’m guessing because they’re starting to feel a bit done with it now). I had to go up to a volunteer and ask ‘CAN I HAVE A STICKER PLEASE’ like a five-year-old haha! He said I could have two if I wanted, but frankly that would have been excessive. This one and Geth’s one will go in a discreet little frame on the wall at some point.

It feels like the beginning of the end at the moment. I’m back at parkrun every week, I’m travelling around a lot to see family, and I’ve even booked a couple of gigs for the autumn (OMG!). The numbers in the UK are giving me cautious optimism that we might be able to have the wonderful proper Christmas we couldn’t have last year, and Geth and I are talking about maybe being able to travel abroad again in 2022. Maybe by this time next year, things will be almost back to normal.

Normal sounds good. Good enough to be worth the rotten vaccine side effects I’m suffering this evening!

parkrunday: Town Moor #506

Back running again this week. It’s amazing how, on only week three of the return, parkrun has started to feel ‘normal’ again.

Town Moor parkrun
No photographer at parkrun today so I took a slightly dodgy and unflattering selfie as we were leaving instead. Part of my mission to collect a photo from every parkrunday going forward!

Next week we will be visiting a parkrun we have not done before, which is very exciting. Still deciding which one though!

Might just sleep this weekend

Geth and I have had another nice few days away visiting family, but are back in Newcastle now. I’m looking forward to the weekend! Bit of parkrun tomorrow and then a good doze for the rest of the weekend, I expect.

I say this every week but I’m hoping things will wind down a bit soon!

Leeds-Liverpool Canal
Another week, another long run along a canal. It didn’t go so well this week so I need to think about some new strategies.

Phone Box Thursday: Yours For A Quid (Or More)

No phone box to log this week, but there have been a few in the news this year.

BT is making more boxes available for the Adopt-A-Kiosk community scheme. I hadn’t realised that communities that want to turn their phone box into a mini library, art gallery or (my personal favourite) defibrillator box only need to pay £1. Hope to see more of these converted boxes, as this is really where phone boxes’ functional future lies.

In Lincoln, meanwhile, this one will cost you £6,000!

And these ones in London are an eye-watering £45,000… but you can’t move or alter them because as K2 boxes they are listed buildings (thankfully). An interesting comment at the bottom of the article from the secretary of the Community Heartbeat Trust charity (the defibrillator charity), which makes me optimistic for more defibrillator boxes.

Geth won’t let me be one of these people… yet. I’m working on it.

Flying Wednesday post

I’m not doing very well with my scheduled blog posts at the moment! Life should calm down again in the next couple of weeks (I am really keen to get back to gamebook reviewing).

In the meantime, here’s a photo of some nettles at the side of the canal from last week. Not a very exciting photo but it marked the turnaround point of my long run so it was important to me!

Nettles
Some thistles too. I still felt really good at this point! Slowed down a bit on the return leg…

Adventures In Coding: Getting Started

After several weeks of game planning, I finally had time to get started on the coding for Game Next this last weekend. Life is fairly busy but I’m going to keep plugging away and try and get a bit done every day.

Code for Adventuron game
The first of what will probably be hundreds of boolean variables.

It’s nice to be back in the Adventuron editor again.
