New machinery!

Another busy day of admin, but then the thing arrived that I was talking about yesterday:

Tumble dryer
Our new tumble dryer! (I also finally got my new camera set up, as you can probably tell!)

I am so glad that we got this.  It’s an early Christmas present from Geth’s dad’s side of the family, and it’s one of the things that will hopefully sort out the issue with dampness we have upstairs.  Up until now, when it’s not summer (or when it is but it’s raining), we’ve had to line-dry clothes upstairs, which has not helped the problem.  The tumble dryer means we don’t have to do that anymore.

It also gives us a bit more space upstairs, seeing as I gleefully dismantled the drying racks this afternoon!

Between that and the dehumidifier that Geth bought a few weeks ago, hopefully we won’t have to put up with mould growing on the ceilings from now on.

I got some more work done in the evening, with triathlon TV and Strictly: It Takes Two as background.  Nice and relaxed!

2018 Ciders #53: Harleston Cideroad

(This post did try to call itself ‘1989’.  Tempted as I was to leave it, my need for my cider series to be organised properly is greater.)

This was a cider that I tried last month when the Free Trade Inn in central Newcastle had it on draught.

It wouldn’t be a British summer without one independent real cider!  It’s quite light-tasting for a rough, but it shows its true colours towards the end of the pint, when the taste gets stronger.  I presume this is due to the stuff that sinks!

You can see the proper logo on the Harleston website.

This post called itself ‘1980’ and I liked the way it looked

As hoped, I’ve had quite a productive day, mainly getting on with admin.  Now catching up with various TV and radio shows I’ve recorded, as Geth is out boardgaming tonight.

We had lots of shiny things arrive in the post today, including my new camera and our race numbers for the Yorkshire 10 Mile in a few weeks’ time, but tomorrow something even bigger and more exciting is (hopefully) showing up!

(It’s a house thing, so don’t get too excited.  We’re looking forward to having it, though.)

Stay tuned.

The best kind of weekend

Another nice relaxing day – it’s been so lovely this weekend for both me and Geth to have some time to ourselves after the busy summer!  We had a lazy morning with more Final Fantasy IX, and then after lunch, I nipped into town to go to a vintage fair.  Now having a quiet evening – Geth has switched to XCOM, so it’s a slightly different set of videogame music!

I feel really refreshed now and am looking forward to a hopefully-productive week.

Vintage fair haul: Newcastle Vintage & Street Food Market

Vintage fairs are back for the autumn/winter!  There’s another one I’m planning to go to next month, by which point I may no longer be strong/warm enough to resist the lure of vintage ’80s jumpers.  I have plenty.  I still want more.

I was sensible today, though, and didn’t buy any jumpers for now.  Instead, I picked up two things I’d actually been visualising: a red blouse to go with one of this year’s Christmas outfits, and a jersey dress that will be nice and comfortable for ’round the house’ days, which, for a work-from-home type like me, is most days.

Vintage fair haul
The red material looks shiny here but it’s actually more kind of sheer.

It’s very satisfying to be able to add a piece here and there to my vintage collection.  Looking forward to wearing both of these!

PBs and hibernation

Unusually, this morning’s parkrun went exactly as planned!  This is because I’d intended all week to have Geth pace me to sub-30, ’cause he’d offered last weekend after I got tantalisingly close again.  My cold threw a bit of a spanner in the works in terms of training this week, as it meant I had to skip my midweek long run, but I’m feeling a bit better now and so had no problems keeping up with Geth round the course today.  The result was a 29:45 parkrun, a forty-second PB and more importantly my first ever sub-30!  This is a real milestone, as it means I finally feel like I’m no longer a slow runner and am instead a solid mid-packer.  Just have to get more training in so I can start translating it to longer distances!

We had a relaxing afternoon hibernating with more Final Fantasy IX – which is our now-traditional way to spend autumn and winter Saturday afternoons and made me feel really cosy and autumnal – before enjoying the first of the Strictly live shows.  I’m still voting for Danny John-Jules, but most of the contestants are really good this year so it’s going to be an interesting series!

Autumn cooking

Still quiet workwise, so it’s been a day spent batch-cooking and catching up with radio shows.  Very relaxing!

After the summer, which is always chaotic and hence bad for my diet, I like to spend the autumn getting properly back on plan and into routine.  I usually have this absolutely down by mid-December, at which point everything gets flipped up in the air for Christmas.  Such is life.  As part of this, I’ve decided to carve out time once a week to batch-cook my lunches, which means I will remember to eat properly at lunchtime rather than just grabbing a bit of fruit, and hence am less likely to be tempted by high-syn snacks mid-afternoon.  Today I made a big batch of Mediterranean vegetable pasta (and have only just realised that I’ve never posted the recipe for that.  Will rectify soon!), which will do nicely for this week.  I also made lasagne for tonight’s tea, which is enough for two nights, so I don’t have to do any cooking tomorrow.  Not struggling for pasta meals at the moment!

I also caught up with a couple of Top 40 chart shows – I’m a few weeks behind at the moment – so by next week’s chart review I will have a lot to say about all the new hits of the last month or so.

2018 Ciders #51: Symonds

Back in the UK for more ciders!

I arrived back home to find that our local pub had changed its regular draught cider from Stowford Press to Symonds, due to deals with manufacturers and stuff.  I am not very happy about this, because Stowford Press is one of my favourite ciders, and Symonds is…not.  It’s too dry for me, and I find it pretty tasteless.

What this means is that I’m tempted to start frequenting other local pubs instead.  Hopefully some of them will have some tastier ciders for me!

Promises of a quiet autumn

A nice quiet Thursday, bookended by Slimming World and Pilates as usual.  Got some reading caught up with as well!

Now spending another evening upstairs watching Geth play Final Fantasy IX.  I’ve got the feeling this is going to be the pattern for a couple of weeks.
