One week to go till Easter. We will be doing some family-seeing and chocolate-eating. It will be nice.
In the meantime I’m plodding on with leg-healing and game-making. Every day is the same at the moment but that’s the way I like it.
It was really nice to be back running parkrun, if gently. I took some scheduled walk breaks and didn’t bomb it down the downhill at the end (I actually walked some of the steeper sections of the finish straight as I was a bit nervous about doing more damage!). Running outside is quite a bit tougher on the legs than the treadmill, especially a hilly parkrun course like Jesmond Dene, but it’s all helping to pinpoint the areas I need to strengthen and protect. I went home and did my full rehab strength training session, which I normally skip after parkrun.
Same again next week I hope.
I had my long-awaited physio appointment yesterday. I’ve been advised that I still shouldn’t run more than two or three miles (*waits patiently for next week’s appointment and hopefully an update to that*), but it is really nice to be able to get out on the roads again. I did a mile this morning and it felt great, and I’m planning to walk-run parkrun tomorrow and see how it goes.
With just over seven weeks to go till the marathon, I am really hoping to be able to get a 14-miler, 16-miler and 18-miler in for the remaining long runs. If the physio still says no long runs for another two or three weeks then I could maybe cut that down to two… but we’ll see. It’s important to me to have a fairly long taper as I feel that’s worked better for me in the past, but at the moment it’s still sort of all up in the air.
As my last long run recedes into the past I do also feel a bit anxious about losing fitness, so I’m going to have another serious look at cross-training options.
Here’s the second of the phone boxes I found en route to the Sheffield Half Marathon start line:
(Coordinates 53°38’07.5″N, 1°46’98.0″W.)
It’s one of several phone boxes lining this stretch of the city centre.
I have actually featured the Surrey Street boxes before, as Bill sent in a photo of the three of them a couple of years ago, but I’m doing new individual posts to feature my individual photos!
There’s also a bonus police box across the street…
Police boxes are normally outside the remit of my phone box posts – there are loads in Edinburgh, almost all of which have been turned into coffee kiosks, but I’ve never seen one outside Scotland before. Apparently they were green in South Yorkshire!
Another Surrey Street box next week.
It’s been a busy week and so waiting for physio day has gone a lot more quickly than I expected. I think whatever happens, I’ll just be glad to have a bit more certainty about my next steps and what I can salvage out of the remainder of marathon training. Things are continuing to improve so I’m hopeful.
Really excited about the idea of getting back out on the roads again. Hope it’s soon 🙂
A few appointments during the day today so I’m getting all of my evening stuff like blog posting and website checking done first thing, meaning I can do my work once I’ve got a nice uninterrupted stretch in the late afternoon / evening. Being in charge of my own work hours is the best, and is something I will never take for granted.
Only two days till the physio appointment now! Legs are feeling generally better and have largely returned to the ‘normal’ baseline level of aches, pains and stiffness, but there are still a lot of tender points. I’m desperate to be back outside running and am crossing my fingers for this weekend. I will also need to revamp my training plan to account for the missed time and for building back up, but I need to know when I can start doing proper non-short non-treadmill running again first.
So this was announced today…
…and to say I’m happy would be an understatement. It’s my favourite game series of all time and it’s been thirteen long years since the last entry. In general I’ve been a little too busy making games to do much playing recently, but this will be an absolute ‘drop everything’ event when it comes out.
One of those good days.
I’ve been on the sofa making my game most of today. Geth was out doing the long run route from my 2021 marathon training block this morning, and I have to say I feel pretty envious – I really want to be back out there, and my legs do feel like they’re improving. I don’t want to risk anything until I’ve seen the physio, though. Four more days.
I’m really appreciating a bit of quiet at the moment. I’m sleeping better and feel very settled in what I’m doing. Just need to get the aches and pains sorted and everything will be golden 🙂
Another week of being off injured, another week of marshalling. Bit of a difference in temperature between this week and last! From an almost-summery feel to a risk of being called off for ice… It did go ahead, though, unlike a few others in the area.

I may well be volunteering again next week, depending on what the physio says on Thursday. We’ll see!
I was fully in a spring place after last week’s warm weather, but it’s been hail and snow for the last few days and my internal calendar has gone back into winter mode. It’s a quiet weekend for us this week and I’m looking forward to dozing on the sofa.
I spent some time today working out the plot issues in my big game project and I am much happier with it as a result. I’m really looking forward to getting the new version put together. Need to focus on the small April project first though!
