Snow day!

It snowed overnight, which cemented my decision not to leave the house today (I need to go to the hospital for some hearing aid admin, but that can definitely wait till next week). Having looked at the weather forecast, Geth and I decided this morning that parkrun will also be a no-go for us tomorrow (and in fact it’s just been announced that Newcastle parkrun won’t even be on), which means two glorious days of hermit living in a row!

This meant I got lots of editing done today, as well as a good chunk of ukulele practice. Our latest song from class is a bit of a step up technique-wise, so I need to have a good few goes at it this week.

More quality time with my sofa tomorrow.

Finalising things

I got my tax return done this morning. I’d left it a bit close to the deadline to submit the actual return, but I’d done all the accounting legwork earlier in the month so it was fairly straightforward. Another January job off the list.

I spent the afternoon doing final edits to a novel I’ve been working on for nearly eight years now, which is the first of the ten projects I’m pitching to agents this year. I still feel the opening few chapters could be improved – they’ve remained fairly unchanged from the 2011 first draft, and I think I’ve become even more pernickety with my writing since then – but it really is one of those cases where I have to stop rereading and tweaking it and start getting it out there.

I then went to my ukulele class, which I’m still really enjoying. We learnt a few more chords and songs, so there’s lots to practise over the next week.

A busy Tuesday

I went for a run this morning, my legs just about having recovered from the two I did at the weekend. I’ve swapped my Tuesday and Thursday runs around on my training plan as I have more time on Tuesday mornings, so today’s run was a recovery pace run, which was probably better after the weekend anyway.

I also got a lot of writing work done today – editing one project and planning out another – and over an hour’s practice on my ukulele. Sometimes I feel like I’m starting to get the hang of the chord transitions, and at other times it just feels hopeless. Need to keep plugging away!

I’m looking forward to class tomorrow, ’cause hopefully we’ll be given some new chords and tunes to practise.

My new appreciation for rest days

Marathon training is tiring. I knew it would be, and I’m not moaning, because I signed up for it willingly and I want to run this marathon. However, it is making me appreciate days like today – when I get to sit on the sofa and get on with my work – all the more. Week 4 is a ‘rest week’ in my training plan, which sadly doesn’t mean I get to take a whole week off, but it does mean that my runs this week will be shorter.

As such, I’m looking forward to extra writing time tomorrow!

Back on the moor

I did parkrun for the first time today since the 27th of October, which is a bit alarming. My time is obviously quite a bit slower at the moment from what I was managing last summer, but I should be able to build it up again over the next few months.

A day off for the rest of today, sort of! I’ve been reading about writing rather than doing actual writing. I feel kind of anxious about that, like I should be doing proper work, but I did say I’d try and give myself weekends off this year. I also got some more books logged on Goodreads (I’m trying to do our whole collection at the moment) and caught up with a year’s worth of a webcomic I’d been neglecting. All good semi-productive weekend activities.

Slightly busier day tomorrow!

Still writing

I’ve spent all day editing one of my writing projects, which has been nice. The project is probably my favourite of all the ones I’m working on at the moment, so I’ve found I’ve been neglecting the others this week. Like I said yesterday, there’s good procrastination and bad procrastination!

Now for an evening of celebrating the arrival of Geth’s sabbatical, which means he will be spending the next few months working from home without being encumbered by teaching or admin. I’ve got some good booze alternatives in to make things feel celebratory.

No Burns Supper tonight, which is the second year in a row I’ve neglected the occasion. I do have some Diet Irn-Bru to make up for it.

Other worlds

I got in my Tuesday speed run this morning. The last couple of Tuesdays it wasn’t much of a ‘speed run’, but today I did finally feel like I could go a bit faster.

I’ve spent the rest of the day working on various different fiction projects. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s a bit difficult to keep my head straight when I’m juggling so many at once, but I’m so enthused about them all that I’m really enjoying it.

More reading tonight! I love winter and its potential for hibernation.

A creative Wednesday

Today was really productive. I got in a full day of writing and editing, which was great. I’m working on about five different writing projects at the moment, which is a lot to keep track of in my head, but it’s making things really interesting.

In the evening, I went to my first ukulele class at the Sage Gateshead. I’ve found over the last few years that going to classes and groups is the best way to keep myself focused on something, and I was pleased that there was a new ‘absolute beginners’ course starting so soon after I got my ukulele. Half the people in the class had also got ukuleles for Christmas – apparently that’s very common among people coming to the spring term courses! We’ve learnt two basic songs already, so it seems as though the course will zip along really quickly.

It’s my usual busy Thursday tomorrow, but I’m looking forward to a bit of breathing space in the afternoon.

An ideal Wednesday

Some weeks, when I’m feeling marginally sociable, Thursdays are my favourite day of the week, because I’m out and about doing things like Slimming World and Pilates (plus, starting this week, a bonus early morning run! Gotta love marathon training…I suppose). Apart from anything else, I get to eat my post weigh-in treat meal, which is always pasta and pesto and is always delicious.

But let’s face it, a typical Wednesday – where I get a whole glorious day just to write, nothing else – is much more ‘me’. Even if I’ve usually run out of syns and so am getting a bit crabby food-wise!

Today has been one of those good Wednesdays. I’ve done a lot of writing and editing and am feeling very productive. Tomorrow, in contrast, will be a lot more hectic.

I am looking forward to that pasta and pesto though.
