Weekend feeling

I had a go at something different for my run this morning…

…then, after another positive counselling session, spent the afternoon doing day job work. Going to try and get a relatively early night before parkrun tomorrow!

Running stuff haul
Some running goodies that I ordered have arrived in the post today. Lots of colourful patterns to cheer me up for the rest of winter! The yellow card on top is the progress card for the social run group I went to this morning (more runs with them = free stuff, which is top quality running motivation).

Today’s earworm playlist:

Justin Bieber – ‘Sorry’
The Rolling Stones – ‘Paint It Black’
Belouis Some – ‘Imagination’
Levellers – ‘Belarus’
FM-84 and Ollie Wride – ‘Wild Ones’
Justin Bieber – ‘Love Yourself’
Normani – ‘Motivation’

Suddenly springlike

Back out on the roads this morning…

…because the weather couldn’t have been more different from yesterday! Lovely and mild out there today – I went for a walk in the afternoon too.

Work has been quiet today so I managed to get most of my admin and writing jobs done in the afternoon. I also made a ton of Shrove Tuesday pancakes this evening! Hoping that they’ll fuel tomorrow morning’s run nicely.

Blue sky in Newcastle
Nice sunny day for walking in the park!

Today’s earworm playlist:

FM-84 and Ollie Wride – ‘Running In The Night’
Double – ‘The Captain Of Her Heart’
Paula Abdul – ‘Straight Up’
The Lancashire Hotpots – ‘This Lancashire Town’

Dozing

A long and difficult run this morning…

…which meant I was a bit too wiped to do much else today, as is becoming typical on Sundays! I spent the afternoon doing a bit more work for my weekend client and watching the second day of the athletics on TV.

I’ve also eaten everything in sight since I got back from my run. I need to be a bit more careful with that as even a super-long run doesn’t provide quite enough spare calories for all the nice things I crave once I’m back home! Back to healthy meals for the next few days.

Salted caramel cupcake
Cake tastes amazing post-run. Well, not immediately post-run, as I need to stop feeling sick first, but a few hours later.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Tyler Lyle – ‘Lost And Found [The Midnight Remix]’
Koichi Sugiyama – ‘Unflinchable Courage’
Katy Perry – ‘Roar’

A working weekend

A brass band and a narrowly-missed target featured at this morning’s parkrun…

…and then I spent the afternoon doing day job work (a client has an urgent deadline so I did some weekend hours today) with the British Indoor Athletics Championship on in the background.

Now having a quiet evening in order to rest before tomorrow’s long run… and I distinctly remember saying something similar last week, and probably the week before. Marathon training does tend to result in some particularly un-rock-‘n’-roll weekends, even by my standards! Early nights all round 🙂

Slashed leopardprint leggings
I also got a long-neglected sewing project done today. I’m guessing these leggings will be a bit too big nowadays but hopefully they’ll also be comfy after tomorrow’s run!

Today’s earworm playlist:

Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber – ‘I Don’t Care’
George Ezra – ‘Paradise’
Alanis Morissette – ‘Hand In My Pocket’

A quietly busy Friday

Just a short run this morning…

…and then I headed to my counselling appointment. I’m starting to feel a bit more focused in the sessions now, and find that I’m able to look at things from angles I hadn’t considered before.

I spent the afternoon doing day job work, and am now having a quiet evening before a hopefully speedy parkrun tomorrow!

Crocii
More spring flowers – the crocii are out in the parks now! Spotted a few early daffodils in the wild as well…

Today’s earworm playlist:

George Ezra – ‘Paradise’
Bon Jovi – ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’
Vangelis – ‘Chariots Of Fire’
The Connells – ”74-’75’
Dee Cooke – ‘Money’*
The Midnight – ‘Lost Boy’

*A truly awful rap track that was unwillingly conceived by my brain circa 2013. Not for public consumption.

Slowly improving the habitat

A recovery mile this morning…

…and then Mum and Dad popped in again so that we could finish off the last few jobs in the bathrooms. Towel rings now installed! Dad has also taken our old laptops home with him for further Linux experimentation.

I’ve spent the afternoon getting on with admin (and daydreaming about further home improvements). Back to work tomorrow.

Towel ring
The sheer beige intensity of my bathroom photos has me itching to repaint the downstairs one in some really bright, funky colour. Like purple, or possibly tropical mango. I might see what’s on offer in the paint section next time I’m at a hardware shop.

Today’s earworm playlist:

The Midnight – ‘Crystalline’
Justin Timberlake – ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’

Peaceful surroundings

Another short run today…

…and then I spent most of the afternoon tidying up, as I’ve let the house get into a bit of a state recently. I mentioned last week that I’m trying to do one small house job every day in the hope that I might have it in a decent state by the end of the year. I’ve not been hugely successful so far – especially at the weekends when I’m tired after running – but I will persevere. I know how much better I’m going to feel when things are sorted out and look nice.

I’ve got a bit of day job work scheduled for later in the week, but I don’t know exactly when it’s going to come in, so I expect that tomorrow will be another chance to get some more admin done.

Honolulu June 2012
I’ve been dreaming about summer holidays again (we had a light flurry of snow today). I don’t usually like photos of myself in my heavier days but this one from Hawaii in June 2012 is soft-focus enough that I can deal with it! Strange to see my hair that long as well – I got fed up of it being scraggy and had it cut short a few years later. I’m desperate to go back to Hawaii at some point – it was such an amazing trip!

Today’s earworm playlist:

Justin Timberlake – ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’
REO Speedwagon – ‘Keep On Loving You’
Timecop1983 – ‘Tokyo’
Kuana Torres Kahele, James Ford Murphy and Napua Greig-Nakasone – ‘Someone To Lava’
Take That – ‘The Flood’

Talking it through

Another short run today…

…and then I headed to a counselling appointment, which was a bit of a short notice thing this week. I’d got onto the waiting list for talking therapy last summer, as after the first few months of sobriety I was starting to feel as though I was finally starting to get my thoughts about my mental health in order to the point that counselling would be useful. However, I was on the list for so long that I’d semi-forgotten about it/assumed that I’d been taken off it for some reason, so it was a surprise earlier this week when they called me to make an appointment! I felt a bit unfocused in the session today as I didn’t really know where to start, but I’m going to make a lot of notes before the next one in order to make the most of the treatment, as you only have a limited number of sessions.

I spent the afternoon finishing off this week’s day job work, meaning that the decks are clear for next week yet again! Looking forward to another good weekend of running – I’ve got a new parkrun to try out tomorrow, and a long run in the stormy weather that’s due on Sunday (that one might not be so pleasant, but it’s all part of marathon training).

GNR membership shirt 2020
My GNR membership shirt arrived today. Really like this logo on the back! Hope the finisher t-shirts will also be nice this year…

Today’s earworm playlist:

Tears For Fears – ‘Woman In Chains’
All Saints – ‘Never Ever’
Soft Cell – ‘Tainted Love’
Bon Jovi – ‘Wanted Dead Or Alive’
Timecop1983 and LeBrock – ‘Too Late’

Open day

After this morning’s run…

…I spent the afternoon at the Newcastle University Postgraduate Open Day in order to find out about doing a Masters in creative writing. It was odd sitting in lecture halls and listening to talks. Other than the odd occasion when I’ve sat in on Geth’s evening lectures, I haven’t been in lecture halls since I graduated in 2008!

It was a really interesting afternoon though. I spoke to a few students who are currently doing the course, went on a tour of the facilities, and attended a couple of general talks on studying at Newcastle and funding sources. I went away with a huge amount of bumpf to read and a lot of things to look into over the next few days!

I then headed to ukulele class, which was as fab as ever. Really enjoying the songs we’re doing this term.

It’ll be another busy day tomorrow, as I need to catch up with day job work in between going to weigh-in and the gig that Geth and I are attending in the evening.

Tote bag
I also got a free tote bag to carry all my open day bumpf in. I don’t really need any more of these, but I always appreciate a nice goodie bag!

Today’s earworm playlist:

Vangelis – ‘Chariots Of Fire’
Stinx – ‘Why Do You Keep On Running Boy’*
Del Amitri – ‘Nothing Ever Happens’

*For the uninitiated (i.e. those who weren’t living in Scotland around the turn of the millennium), this was a parody of Britney Spears’ ‘…Baby One More Time’ that featured in a legendary HEBS (Health Education Board for Scotland) advert from 2000, aimed at discouraging teenagers from smoking. The advert was renowned as being absolutely genius (I did a day of work experience at the BBC during this period and they were all raving about it), and I sang the song in the school corridors every breaktime with my pals for about three months solid.

Didn’t discourage me from smoking, though.

Worth a watch if you’ve never seen it, if only for some prime nostalgia:

A slightly gloomy Monday

Today has certainly been as proactive as I hoped – the day job work is continuing to pile in, which is great, and I got a good if slightly too fast recovery run in this morning as well as another chunk of post-Christmas admin catchup done. However, I feel a bit glum this evening, and I think I’ve maybe been in the house by myself a bit too much lately. I’m really looking forward to the adventures and trips away planned for later in the year, but they seem a long way away right now.

On the bright side, my new mobile phone arrived this afternoon. Something new to set up and play with tonight!

Tomorrow is another fairly featureless day, but I do have a few exciting things coming up later in the week.

Basil plant
I’ve started a new habit today of doing one tiny ‘house sorting out’ job every day, as I really don’t have time for big sessions of house stuff at the moment. Today’s job was sorting out the corner of the kitchen windowsill where Basil the basil plant lives – it was taken up with a rusty metal box overflowing with clothes pegs that we don’t really use much since getting our tumble drier. Basil himself is a bit of a lopsided beast (half of his roots were already pretty much dead when I got him), but at least his corner looks nice now.

Today’s earworm playlist:

The ‘mild green Fairy Liquid’ jingle from back in the day
The Midnight – ‘Vampires’
Kylie Minogue – ‘Got To Be Certain’

And a bonus track that Geth was humming earlier:

Del Amitri – ‘Nothing Ever Happens’
