parkrunday: Jesmond Dene #50

It was a relatively short-notice volunteer slot for me this week after I decided to rest my knee until next weekend – and a really great day for it, because Jesmond Dene parkrun was celebrating its 50th event! With the COVID hiatus it had been a long time coming, so there was much cake to be had at the finish.

I was marshalling at the ‘mind the steps’ point, which I hadn’t done since February 2020 – it’s a nice peaceful spot a few hundred yards from the start/finish, and so you get to see everybody going out as a big clump and coming back as a trickle!

Marshalling again next week.

Appreciating the quiet

It’s been quiet work-wise the last couple of weeks, which has been well-timed for once as I have really appreciated having the opportunity to relax with creative projects after finishing TechUP. Gradually getting back to normal now, and looking forward to a few excursions during the rest of the month.

Another nice quiet weekend just now though. I’ll be parkrunning tomorrow but otherwise staying in.

Third parkrunday in a row at Jesmond Dene and second parkrunday in a row running it. A minute and a half faster than last week, which is not bad! It’s a difficult one to pace but I’m starting to remember how to do it.

It was the International Women’s Day celebration at parkrun today so it was mostly female marshals on the way round. Geth usually marshals but was doing post-event close down instead today, so I went home by myself once I’d finished in order to get warm!

Blurry token
I’ve been trying to remember to take a photo of my finish token at the end of parkrun in case there are results issues. No issues today, but I’m not sure this blurry picture would have helped anyway!

Another attempt at Jesmond Dene next week – we’ll see how it goes.

parkrunday: Jesmond Dene #47

First non-volunteer run at Jesmond Dene since… actually, I don’t remember! I tailwalked there last August, and ran after giving the first timers’ briefing in February 2020 just before the hiatus… but the last time I ran there without volunteering could well have been December 2019. It’s a tough course hence why it’s my usual parkrun for volunteering at!

However, as Geth is now volunteering there every week, I’ve decided to take the opportunity to spend a couple of months tackling the Dene’s hills again. Maybe I’m just doing more hills in general these days, but the course was actually really enjoyable and not as tough as I remembered.

Forgot to take a post-parkrun selfie again so here’s an action shot from the event Facebook page. Photo by Jesmond Dene parkrun.

I also hadn’t realised how much I had missed that sprint finish during the last half mile down the hill. Makes all the earlier climbing worth it… sort of.

I’ll give it another go next week. Might push a bit harder during the early sections!

February is rushing by and today it was time for the monthly volunteering slot. Geth will be volunteering every week during his marathon training block, which for the next few weeks will give me an excuse to challenge myself on the hills of Jesmond Dene again. I’ve volunteered there a lot but haven’t run it properly since before the hiatus – so nearly two years ago now!

Jesmond Dene
Volunteering selfie looked the same as all my recent volunteering selfies, so here’s a picture of the Dene instead. It’s a world of fallen trees after all the recent storms!

parkrunday: Town Moor #527

It was Geth’s last parkrun as a runner for a while (he’ll be volunteering instead during his marathon training block) so we went to Town Moor in the hope that he could have a good whizz round. Unfortunately it was a bit too breezy for fast times today (though nothing compared to two weeks ago!), and I was taking it easy due to a slight twinge anyway.

Due to chatting to friends at the end I forgot to take a post-parkrun selfie today, but I did take this shot of our much-appreciated heater when we got home.

Not pictured: the other fire also going on the other side of me. Post-parkrun mornings are cold in the winter.

parkrunday: Leazes #51

Town Moor and Jesmond Dene parkruns were both off this morning so Geth and I took the opportunity to visit Leazes again. I thought I’d just plod today, but actually managed my joint second fastest time since the restart! So much better than the last time I slogged round that course in late September, when I was knackered from the sharp end of marathon training.

Post-parkrun
Weather conditions much improved from last week!

Next week is Geth’s last parkrun as a runner for a while (he’s going to be volunteering every week during his marathon training block) so we’ll need to mark it somehow.

We muddled through somehow!

It’s been another challenging week in our house – between our heavy loads of work/studying/running, the saga of my laptop replacement, dealing with Zombie Eye IV, and a bit of a shock yesterday when we received a letter telling us the company scheduled to do our front garden this year had gone bankrupt (resulting in us needing to find some way of getting our rather large deposit back), it has been extremely eventful and it feels like last weekend was months ago!

Other than a bit of admin relating to some of the above – and finding a parkrun near us that will actually be going ahead tomorrow morning – I expect I will be spending a lot of the weekend staring into space on the sofa. If I do find some energy from somewhere, I may try and get some of my less-taxing course modules done so that I’m not panicking so much at the end of February.

Tonight, though, I most definitely need a couple of hours of Not Doing Anything At AllTM!
