A quiet Monday

A fairly relaxed start to the working week. I did some admin for a client I’m editing for tomorrow (I’m quite glad to have editing work again as the last month has been pretty dead!) and then got on with my writing for the rest of the day.

Geth is out boardgaming tonight, so I’m going to take the opportunity to get on with my ukulele practice, which I’ve been neglecting a bit this week.

Paring down

It’s been a bit of a long day today. The tree doctors were round in the morning to remove two trees in the front garden and cut back all the others, so both the front and back garden look a lot neater now. I spent the day working on my pitch package for sending out later this week, and then the treadmill arrived late afternoon, so I set that up before I had to head out. I’ll be doing my first treadmill run in the morning! I’ll also be watching some recorded TV while I’m on it, which will kill two birds with one stone.

In the evening, I went to ukulele class, and learnt a new song and a new chord. Lots to practise this week.

Despite the fact that tomorrow’s Thursday, I think it might actually turn out to be a more relaxed day than today!

Seasonal dissonance

Well, all the snow melted overnight and the temperature suddenly jumped from ‘depths of winter’ to ‘more like spring’, so after getting all my writing done for the day, I ventured out to go get my hearing aid admin done at the hospital. This, as I should have expected with hearing-related medical stuff, was not as straightforward as it should have been.

In short: I need new earmoulds for my aids as my existing ones are starting to crack, but the technician said that before they can take impressions for the new moulds, I need to go to the GP to get my ears syringed, and then go back to the hospital. I’ve got the feeling that this is going to turn into one of those medical sagas that takes up a lot of time.

Time to get on with some ukulele practice, then back to writing for the evening, with some nice BBC4 music documentaries in the background.

OOTD 4th February 2019
OOTD: all of this was covered in snow yesterday! Jumper unknown brand (vintage 1980s, bought at vintage fair 2017), leggings Primark (2018), boots Carefree (2017).

Snow day!

It snowed overnight, which cemented my decision not to leave the house today (I need to go to the hospital for some hearing aid admin, but that can definitely wait till next week). Having looked at the weather forecast, Geth and I decided this morning that parkrun will also be a no-go for us tomorrow (and in fact it’s just been announced that Newcastle parkrun won’t even be on), which means two glorious days of hermit living in a row!

This meant I got lots of editing done today, as well as a good chunk of ukulele practice. Our latest song from class is a bit of a step up technique-wise, so I need to have a good few goes at it this week.

More quality time with my sofa tomorrow.

OOTD 1st February 2019
OOTD: just a selfie today ’cause I’m not going out in that snow! T-shirt Gildan for Infest (2015), mohair blanket unknown brand (gift from Dad 2002).

Finalising things

I got my tax return done this morning. I’d left it a bit close to the deadline to submit the actual return, but I’d done all the accounting legwork earlier in the month so it was fairly straightforward. Another January job off the list.

I spent the afternoon doing final edits to a novel I’ve been working on for nearly eight years now, which is the first of the ten projects I’m pitching to agents this year. I still feel the opening few chapters could be improved – they’ve remained fairly unchanged from the 2011 first draft, and I think I’ve become even more pernickety with my writing since then – but it really is one of those cases where I have to stop rereading and tweaking it and start getting it out there.

I then went to my ukulele class, which I’m still really enjoying. We learnt a few more chords and songs, so there’s lots to practise over the next week.

OOTD 30th January 2019
OOTD: it’s still cold, and this is the warmest of my hoodies. Hoodie unknown brand (2009), t-shirt Punk Masters (2018), jeans Zara (2018), boots Carefree (2017).

Chuck Berry – You Never Can Tell
Gene Kelly – Singin’ In The Rain
Dire Straits – Romeo And Juliet

A busy Tuesday

I went for a run this morning, my legs just about having recovered from the two I did at the weekend. I’ve swapped my Tuesday and Thursday runs around on my training plan as I have more time on Tuesday mornings, so today’s run was a recovery pace run, which was probably better after the weekend anyway.

I also got a lot of writing work done today – editing one project and planning out another – and over an hour’s practice on my ukulele. Sometimes I feel like I’m starting to get the hang of the chord transitions, and at other times it just feels hopeless. Need to keep plugging away!

I’m looking forward to class tomorrow, ’cause hopefully we’ll be given some new chords and tunes to practise.

OOTD 29th January 2019
OOTD: looking for more comfy jersey ’80s dresses like this one! Dress Triumph (vintage 1980s, bought at vintage fair 2018), belt unknown brand (vintage 1980s, thrifted from Mum 2019), tights Primark (2017), boots Moda In Pelle (2018).

*Except that it was the ‘I run like Mo Farah’ version that I’ve discussed before.

Procrastination

I’m still not getting the stuff I’m supposed to be doing done in that Thursday afternoon gap between Slimming World and Pilates. After an inspiring class last night, the draw of my ukulele was too much* and I spent all afternoon practising instead of getting on with my writing work. I didn’t even have the excuse of an early run tiring me out today!

Oh well. Just need to rejig my schedule for tomorrow and I should be back on track. Anyway, I suppose ‘music practice’ procrastination is better than ‘mindless browsing the web’ procrastination.

*This is mainly because I cannot get the songs we’ve been playing in class out of my head (see earworm playlist below) – and the version that gets in my head is my own badly played ukulele performance rather than the actual song! If this is going to continue, I at least need to get marginally better at the songs so that there aren’t as many duff notes in my earworms. I hate my brain.

OOTD 24th January 2019
OOTD: it’s Thursday, and my Slimming World group are probably starting to think I don’t own any other clothes. Jumper Carlo Colucci (vintage 1980s, bought at vintage fair 2017).

A busy Wednesday

I got lots of work done today! Five writing projects worked on, one appointment made, one ukulele class attended. Ukulele class is still moving nice and fast and I have lots of new songs to practise this week.

It’s freezing and icy outside so I’m skipping my run tomorrow, but I’m going to rejig things for next week ’cause I can’t afford to be a fairweather runner during marathon training.

OOTD 23rd January 2019
OOTD: just a quick selfie today as I’ve been busy. Glasses Emporio Armani (2017), jumper Faber (vintage 1980s, bought at vintage fair 2018).

A creative Wednesday

Today was really productive. I got in a full day of writing and editing, which was great. I’m working on about five different writing projects at the moment, which is a lot to keep track of in my head, but it’s making things really interesting.

In the evening, I went to my first ukulele class at the Sage Gateshead. I’ve found over the last few years that going to classes and groups is the best way to keep myself focused on something, and I was pleased that there was a new ‘absolute beginners’ course starting so soon after I got my ukulele. Half the people in the class had also got ukuleles for Christmas – apparently that’s very common among people coming to the spring term courses! We’ve learnt two basic songs already, so it seems as though the course will zip along really quickly.

It’s my usual busy Thursday tomorrow, but I’m looking forward to a bit of breathing space in the afternoon.

New Year’s Resolutions 2019

I did sit down and write a very long post about plans for 2019, but it got a bit reflective and overwhelming and kind of un-fun.  Instead, I’ve condensed it into a list of New Year’s Resolutions, which I suppose is more traditional anyway!

So, in 2019 I want to:

1. Finish sorting out the house contents.

Refreshing the actual decor of the house such as carpets and walls is going to be a job for next decade (which sounds kind of scary now I’ve written it down), but finishing sorting out the actual contents of the house is definitely something I can get done this year. Most of the stuff I still need to get rid of is only still in the house because it needs scanning first, so once I’ve set up the scanner and shredder in the study, I’ll be able to chip away at this boring job quite efficiently.

2. Write 500,000 words in 2019…

Among the online writing communities I frequent, this is known as a ‘half milwordy’. I know it sounds ridiculous, but between this blog and all the poetry and fiction that I write every day, it’s actually fairly manageable.

3. …and edit and pitch all the words I’ve already written.

I’ve wanted to be a published author since I was four (so it’s actually going to be thirty years on Thursday, OMG), and that is never going to happen if all my writing just stays between me and my computer. This year, I’m going to edit all my existing projects to a finalised state and prepare ten project pitches for sending out to agents and publishers throughout the year.

4. Take weekends off.

Well, other than running, obviously. Apart from the daily to-do list, I’m not scheduling any chores for the weekends.

5. Buy fewer clothes.

I had to buy a whole new wardrobe last year because I’d lost so much weight. It was really fun, but I have enough clothes now. I’ll allow myself one purchase every time I go to a vintage fair, because vintage fairs are awesome.

6. Run a marathon.

It’s booked, it’s planned, I’ve selected the 16-week training plan I’m going to be following starting on the 7th of January. London, here I come! I am 100% certain that this is the only one I will ever do, so I’m determined to do it properly.

7. Perform some of my poetry in public.

This one is absolutely terrifying and as such is the one thing on this list that is at risk of not getting done out of pure fear. Up until now, this is the kind of thing that would have required a lot of Dutch courage, but as it happens, a more important resolution is to…

8. Get sober.

It’s well past time, and from the 6th of January onwards I’ll no longer be consuming alcohol. I’ll do a longer post about this later this week.

9. Get back into the habit of music practice.

I got several small instruments for Christmas including a lovely ukulele – I’d put them on my Christmas list and Dad did a lot more research into them than I had, so I got better versions than I’d asked for! I’m going to get an hour’s practice in every evening that I can, but more importantly, I’m going to sign up for beginners’ classes at the Sage Gateshead, as I find I stick with things better when I have a group or class for accountability (it also gets me out of the house and meeting people).

10. Actually play some videogames.

I didn’t have time for videogaming AT ALL in 2018. I’ve been sorely neglecting both my 3DS and my Steam account (I’ve still got a Steam voucher my brother Malcolm gave me for last Christmas that I’ve not spent yet!) and I’m really itching to get back into it again, especially seeing as I’ve been watching Geth play so many games on the Switch recently. Maybe all those free weekends I’m planning will give me a chance to mash buttons again!

It’ll be interesting to revisit this post in a year’s time!
