Appreciating the quiet

It’s been quiet work-wise the last couple of weeks, which has been well-timed for once as I have really appreciated having the opportunity to relax with creative projects after finishing TechUP. Gradually getting back to normal now, and looking forward to a few excursions during the rest of the month.

Another nice quiet weekend just now though. I’ll be parkrunning tomorrow but otherwise staying in.

Phone Box Thursday: West Turnpike, Glanton

Here’s the last of the phone boxes that Mum and Dad found in Northumberland the other week.

Red phone box

No phone in this one, so hopefully they’ll find an alternative use for it soon.

In other phone box news: having heard from Mum today about the Silverburn phone box now being listed (here’s a post about it from a local MSP), I’ve updated the post for that one!

The start of spring

I saw blossom for the first time this year on my run today.

Blossom

It’s my favourite thing about running in the spring. Hoping to spot some more on my long run tomorrow (if nothing else it will give me an excuse to stop for a minute and take a photo!).

Unexpected rest-ish day

As I mentioned the other day, I realised on Sunday that my shorter runs this week were scheduled to be a bit shorter than usual, whereas my Thursday long run will be a step up to twelve miles. My Tuesday run is usually four miles at the moment but today it was only a one-mile streak saver (i.e. a rest day on the plan, so just a mile to maintain my daily run streak).

This was probably well-timed, as I noticed quite a lot of soreness in my legs today. Hopefully the rest-ish day will help with that and I’ll be fresher again for tomorrow and Thursday.

Keeping things contained

One of my bad habits when creating games is allowing them to sprawl and sprawl as I develop ideas. This is why I have a ton of really huge unfinished games among my files, waiting patiently for me to get going with them again. The last few years have been a learning process in this regard, and I’m trying really hard with my current game not to let it grow outwith its originally planned boundaries.

Usually I use jam and competition deadlines to help with this. I plan to enter a few this spring if my games are ready, but I don’t want to put any pressure on myself as it’s been a busy few months and I’m meant to be taking a break right now. We’ll see how it goes.

Enjoying some time off

I’ve had a very enjoyable weekend working on my new game. I also just checked my marathon training plan for the week ahead and Monday and Tuesday will be a little lighter than expected (presumably to save legs for Thursday’s 12-miler), so hopefully I’ll be able to squeeze in some game stuff during the upcoming week as well.

It’s been nice, over the last week, to have some downtime playing games in the evening as well. I’m currently working my way through Counterfeit Monkey, a text-based game I’ve meant to play for years but haven’t got round to until now.

No big plans for the week ahead other than running and creative stuff, which is fine by me.

parkrunday: Jesmond Dene #48

Third parkrunday in a row at Jesmond Dene and second parkrunday in a row running it. A minute and a half faster than last week, which is not bad! It’s a difficult one to pace but I’m starting to remember how to do it.

It was the International Women’s Day celebration at parkrun today so it was mostly female marshals on the way round. Geth usually marshals but was doing post-event close down instead today, so I went home by myself once I’d finished in order to get warm!

Blurry token
I’ve been trying to remember to take a photo of my finish token at the end of parkrun in case there are results issues. No issues today, but I’m not sure this blurry picture would have helped anyway!

Another attempt at Jesmond Dene next week – we’ll see how it goes.

Friday off

I was able to have a proper day off today and get into some game creation. There are a few competitions and jams this spring into which I am interested in putting my text adventures 🙂 It’s nice to be back doing something creative again.

Looking forward to playing some videogames as well this weekend. I feel like I’ve been saying that for ages!

Phone Box Thursday: Callaly Road, Whittingham

Here’s another phone box that Mum and Dad found in Northumberland a couple of weeks back.

Red phone box

(Coordinates 55°40’07.8″N, 1°89’03.3″W.)

This is another village centre phone box, and unusually still has a phone inside. Bit tatty on the outside but it’s nice that it’s still functional!

A final box (for now) from Northumberland next week.

All done!

Just a quick post tonight as it was presentation night for our group project. It went really well! I am thrilled to have finished TechUP finally, though I will miss it as well. Ready for a bit of a break now.
