Getting out of the rain

Following this morning’s race, Geth and I headed to the pub to meet up with our friend Matt, and then went for a well-deserved race celebration meal at Pizza Hut.  Much as I like races, it was much nicer drinking and eating in warm indoor environments than it had been running in the rain this morning.

We made sure to finish our meal in plenty of time so we could get back and watch Doctor Who and the Strictly results, which is already becoming my favourite kind of autumn Sunday evening.

Race Review: Yorkshire 10 Mile 2018

This is the second year running that Geth and I have run the Yorkshire 10 Mile.  Last year, it was a very pretty race, and although I was struggling a bit as my training had suffered, I really enjoyed the scenery.  This year, it was the opposite way round.

As forecast, it was absolutely chucking it down in York today, and it was the wettest race I’ve ever experienced.  My running glasses are not water-resistant, and so, because the rain was so heavy, I was basically running the race blind.  I couldn’t see the puddles, resulting in very wet feet.  My hearing aids were getting waterlogged and kept cutting out.  In short, I was pretty sensory-deprived and unaware of my surroundings.  I didn’t notice a single mile marker, and I only realised two of the water stations were there after I’d already run through them.  Luckily, it was so wet and cold that I really didn’t need to drink much water en route today.

However, Geth and I were both hopeful of PBs, as last year’s race was the only 10-mile race we’d done and we both felt we were in better shape this year.  Geth took a good chunk off his time, as he’s had a really good year training-wise, though he is suffering with a knee issue that needs to be seen to.  Last year, I’d aimed for sub-2hr but had ended up with 2:06:38.  This year, I aimed for sub-2hr again, and was fairly confident I’d get it as my training between the GNR and Yorkshire has been much better.  I ended up with a time of 1:47:31 – a 19:07 minute PB!  I’m really happy with that, especially as the conditions were so miserable.

I doubt we’ll do this race again next year, as the organisers are moving it to later in October and it doesn’t really fit in with our race plans for next autumn.  However, assuming I don’t end up saying ‘never again’ to marathons after I do London in April, I may come back and do the full marathon sometime.

Kicking off another running weekend!

It’s a race weekend for me and Geth, so we volunteered at parkrun this morning in the pouring rain.  According to the weather forecast, we’re going to be running the race in the pouring rain tomorrow, so I suppose it was good practice.

We had a nice meal out with lots of pasta in order to carb-load for tomorrow, enjoyed the main Strictly show, and are now watching triathlon TV to get us in the mood for the race!

Speeding up

Another Saturday, another sub-30 parkrun – and today I did it without the help of a pacer, which proves that I can do it myself!  I’m still having my third and fourth kilometre slump, though, so I really need to have a think about what I can do about that.

We then had a nice pub lunch and a catchup with Kieran and Lisa, so it’s been a good afternoon!  Now relaxing with Strictly and other TV.

Running…and sleeping

I went out for a ten-mile run this morning in preparation for York next week.  It went really well – probably better than any ten-mile run I’ve ever done – with no tiredness and hardly any aches and pains.  Of course, when I do the same distance in York I’m fully expecting all my usual problems to show up, because that’s been the pattern for races this year!

When I got home, though, I did crash a bit and was sorely tempted to go back to bed.  Instead, I just made the sofa feel like bed by getting out my mohair blanket for the first time this autumn, and have been semi-getting on with things while trying not to fall asleep.

Geth is about to put YouTube back on for the evening, so I’ll be hearing lots of fan theories about Star Wars and Final Fantasy!

Settling into that Saturday stride

Another successful parkrun this morning.  It was a club takeover this week, so there were pacers – and excitingly, they brought some new pacer t-shirts with them to fill in the minutes that were previously not being paced.  This meant there was a 29-minute pacer at parkrun for the very first time, which was very well-timed for me!

I wasn’t sure I’d be able to keep up with 29-minute pace, but I managed to stay on the pacer’s heels the whole way round – which resulted in a 28:42 parkrun!  More than a minute off last week’s PB – and incredibly, that’s three PBs in a row!  I can’t believe the times I’m getting at the moment.  Just hope I can start translating them to longer distances soon!

I had a relaxed Saturday afternoon watching Geth play Final Fantasy IX again, and after enjoying the Strictly live show, we’re now continuing our Marvel catchup with Spider-Man.  Looking forward to another quiet day tomorrow.

Phone Box Thursday: Borough Road, Sunderland

Moving onto a phone box that I first spotted while running the Sunderland 10K in 2016, but of which I only had the chance to take a photo the following year, when Geth and I went to Sunderland so he could look at the course in preparation (he ran it for the first time in 2017).

Red phone box

(Coordinates 54°90’43.5″N, 1°38’11.9″W.)

I love a good phone-box-turned-cash-machine – it keeps the boxes useful in the world of the 21st century!

Update 26th February 2026: unfortunately this phone box has now been removed (and Google Street View doesn’t seem to have historical data available for Sunderland city centre) but I’ve added a coordinate link for where it used to be.

Back to long runs again

It was good to be able to go for a long run this morning after being too ill last week.  I was a bit tired out in the second half, but I think that’s partially because I’m not fully recovered yet.  Next week should be better.

A relaxed afternoon catching up with admin again, and now have YouTube on in the background courtesy of Geth.

PBs and hibernation

Unusually, this morning’s parkrun went exactly as planned!  This is because I’d intended all week to have Geth pace me to sub-30, ’cause he’d offered last weekend after I got tantalisingly close again.  My cold threw a bit of a spanner in the works in terms of training this week, as it meant I had to skip my midweek long run, but I’m feeling a bit better now and so had no problems keeping up with Geth round the course today.  The result was a 29:45 parkrun, a forty-second PB and more importantly my first ever sub-30!  This is a real milestone, as it means I finally feel like I’m no longer a slow runner and am instead a solid mid-packer.  Just have to get more training in so I can start translating it to longer distances!

We had a relaxing afternoon hibernating with more Final Fantasy IX – which is our now-traditional way to spend autumn and winter Saturday afternoons and made me feel really cosy and autumnal – before enjoying the first of the Strictly live shows.  I’m still voting for Danny John-Jules, but most of the contestants are really good this year so it’s going to be an interesting series!

Latest house stage done!

After a busy week working on the house, I finally had it ready for visitors staying by the time Geth’s family – Anne, Heulwen and Laura – arrived last night.  I’ve got a good sense of what the next stage is, but for the next couple of weeks I’ll be taking a break from the house project and doing other things!

After a good catch-up with the in-laws last night, Geth and I dragged ourselves out of bed to go to parkrun this morning.  I was expecting to have to take it easy after the GNR last week (not to mention the amount of dust I’ve been dealing with this week, which has given me a nasty cough and apparently turned the insides of my lungs black – super goth), but when I got going I found I had boundless energy and ended up with a PB!  Official time was 30:25, but everyone’s official time seems to be six to eight seconds slower than their watch time today, so maybe there was an issue with the results.  Either way, I’m edging ever closer to that sub-30, and I’m hoping to be able to go for it next week.

I’m having a quiet couple of hours to myself at the moment while Geth and the family are in town shopping – later on we’ll be heading to our friend Matthias’ birthday drinks for a while before coming back home for tea.  A nice relaxed Saturday!

OOTD catchup tomorrow when I sort my photos out!
