parkrun tourism: Gateshead

Something that I’m going to be doing a lot as part of my parkrunning in 2020 is hopping in the car on a Saturday morning and driving to my current NENDY (nearest event not done yet). This will hopefully enable me to explore all the parkruns in the north-east of England by the end of next year! I made a start on this project a few weeks ago when I drove over the Tyne Bridge to Gateshead parkrun, which is one of the closest neighbouring parkruns to Newcastle but one that I hadn’t done until then.

parkrun barcode
Forgot to take a picture of the park, but I did have my new barcode with me!

Gateshead parkrun is a three-and-a-half-lap course through a very pretty park with a lake and a bowling green and all sorts. It’s a slightly confusing course for a newcomer, so for me it really was a case of ‘just follow everyone else’! It was a nice sunny day when I visited, so I was able to appreciate the park properly.

The course is slightly undulating, with a fairly steep climb about two-thirds of the way through the lap and then another shorter climb on the finishing straight. I’d say it’s probably middling in terms of parkrun difficulty.

Geth was Keyforging so he didn’t attend with me on this occasion, but he now seems interested in checking out Gateshead parkrun at some point so I’m sure I’ll be back!

Life without alcohol: ten months sober

I’m more than 300 days sober now (304 to be precise), which is very nearly the bulk of a year. So far it’s been one of the strangest years of my life, but I won’t go into that until the year is properly over.

Hallowe'en lantern

Ten months in, I’m sort of newly realising that I’m still actually fairly early on in my journey, and there are still things that are tripping me up, and things that I’m encountering sober for the first time. I haven’t done a music festival this year, and I don’t think I’ll be ready to do one next year either. I still don’t feel fully comfortable in pubs and clubs, and in fact I’m going to them less and less frequently.

I won’t be playing the ‘election drinking game’ this December. This was something that I did for every general election for years and years – I made huge jugs of cocktail with crappy old alcohol from the back of the cupboard to ‘use it up’, and then put food colouring in the jugs to match the political party colours. The game was very simple – ‘sip for a hold, glug for a gain’ – so when Labour held a seat in Newcastle, you’d take a sip of the red cocktail, and when the SNP gained a seat in Scotland, you’d take a big glug of the yellow cocktail (2015 required a LOT of yellow cocktail). Geth and I would be sick for days afterwards, but it was a tradition. I didn’t do it in 2017 because it was too soon after the 2015 election, but this is the first general election for which it’s no longer an option, and strangely, I feel a bit bereft as a result.

(I’ve also realised, in my wiser sober state, that following politics is not actually good for my mental health at the moment, and while I’ll obviously be voting, I will be getting an early night on election day instead of watching the results.)

I’ve also not navigated the Christmas period sober yet. While I will have had nearly a year to prepare for it, I’m still feeling quite a bit of trepidation about the whole thing. I’m already a bit sad that I won’t ever again have mulled wine, or Christmas cake made with whisky, or Christmas pudding with brandy poured over it for the flambé effect. I am, however, excited about doing the extra parkruns over the Christmas period, and Geth has promised to have a quiet Hogmanay with me so that we can do the New Year’s Day double parkrun.

I had a fairly ridiculous moment at the A-ha gig in Leeds on Saturday night when I went to the bar to get drinks for myself and Geth. Because of avoiding bars for the most part over the last few months, as well as the fact that it’s usually Geth who buys the drinks, I hadn’t actually been in a situation since I got sober where I was carrying a pint of beer for someone else. When I was still drinking, if I was collecting a pint for Geth, I would always take a big sip of it before carrying it back to the table so that I wouldn’t spill it while carrying it (the extra beer would be lost either way, so it wasn’t like I was stealing his beer – just preventing the excess from dripping all over my hand and the floor!). It wasn’t until I had the beer in my hand on Saturday night that I realised that was no longer an option.

Cue an extremely slow walk back into the main arena in an attempt not to spill the beer (which was ultimately unsuccessful as there was a door in my way), and then a further realisation that I couldn’t even lick my own hand clean, and…it just all felt a bit ludicrous, really. Maybe I should start carrying protective plastic gloves.

I’ve not reviewed any booze alternatives this month as I’ve been a bit too busy for non-diary blogging most days. I will try and do some over this next month, though, as I’ve got a bit of a backlog.

Mental health improvement plans are still quietly trucking along in the background. Hopefully next month I’ll have a bit more of an update on that.

Extra time

It’s been a pretty busy day (and this will continue for the next several days until…um…Christmas, maybe? The non-stop time of year has started!).

I did Jesmond Dene parkrun again this morning and took more than three minutes off my time from a fortnight ago – knowing the course makes a huge difference! I then spent a bit of time sorting out the house this afternoon as Geth and I are hosting a Hallowe’en boardgaming session tomorrow, and since then have been working on an article I’m writing for a website.

I’ll be mostly boardgaming tomorrow, but will also be squeezing in a bit of time for working on my text adventure game!

I don’t think I’ve ever been so grateful for the extra hour you get from the clocks going back…

USB sticks
Not an OOTD: just some of my collection of USB sticks. I carry them every time I leave the house, even when running, because I’m paranoid that the house will burn down and I’ll lose my entire life’s work of writing and other computer files (I don’t store stuff on the cloud ’cause I don’t trust it). Carrying them while running is a bit of a pain and I’m hoping to find a better way of doing things at some point.

Inside

I’ve had a day in the house today (meaning a treadmill walk this evening to get my steps in!). I’ve mainly been working on my text adventure – the end is in sight in terms of the actual programming, but I’ve still got quite a lot of graphics to create.

I’ve also spent a bit more time looking into job opportunities. There’s a few different things I could do and I’m going to spend a bit more time researching them this weekend.

Looking forward to having another go at Jesmond Dene parkrun tomorrow morning!

Pixel turnip lanterns
Not an OOTD: some more pixel details, this time of turnip lanterns.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Jon & Vangelis – I’ll Find My Way Home
Michael Land – Inside The Governor’s Mansion
Squeeze – Up The Junction
Duran Duran – Secret Oktober

Bits of everything!

Another good productive day. I went out for a run (just a short one today – I’m trying to get a bit of speed up by doing shorter runs on some days) and finished off my poems for this evening’s poetry night. I then spent the afternoon working on my text adventure game. Still quite a bit to do but I’m on track!

No ukulele class tonight (it’s half term) so I headed straight to poetry night. Poetry night was good – I read another running poem (I do a lot of those) and a poem based on the story of my game. Now back home catching up with a few writing tasks before bed.

It’s weigh-in day tomorrow – fingers crossed it’ll be another week slightly closer to my target range!

Kalenji running top
Not quite an OOTD (although I will be wearing it to parkrun on Saturday): one of my recent postal goodies! Have stocked up on some new winter running gear.

Semi-flying Saturday post

Have had a very busy day that included driving to a new parkrun and going to an awesome gig. Will update fully tomorrow!

Treading heavily

A full day working on my game today. Back on the treadmill again in the evening too!

I’m trying out a new (to me) parkrun tomorrow morning, and then going to a gig in the evening. Sunday will be spent working on my game again. Should be a good weekend 🙂

Old running shoes
Sort of an OOTD: my old running shoes have briefly come out of retirement for my treadmill runs/walks! I find they hurt my feet now, though, so I’m going to get some new ones specially for the treadmill.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Wham! – Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

A slightly more relaxed Saturday

I was up at the crack of dawn this morning as I wanted to watch the first part of Eliud Kipchoge’s sub-two-hour marathon attempt before Geth and I headed to parkrun. It was a lovely morning for the inaugural Jesmond Dene parkrun, and it was good to have a walk there and back as well – no boring treadmill walking to get my steps in today!

Once home, I watched the rest of the Kipchoge coverage (and got spoilered for the result by the BBC when I opened iPlayer – seriously, sort it out, we can’t all watch everything live!*). A fantastic day for the running world – it’s been proven the barrier can be broken now, and I’m sure we’ll see it happen in an official race eventually.

I spent the rest of the day having a proper chilled Saturday afternoon – I did a bit more coding on my text adventure, and planned out my parkrun schedule for the next few months (I’m very enthusiastic about parkrun at the moment now that my 100th parkrun is not too far in the distance).

More running and more coding tomorrow!

*Although I did see more than one person posting about how they spent the first fifteen minutes of parkrun running with their phone in front of their face in order to watch the end of the attempt. I am not quite that mental.

Slow cooker curry
Not an OOTD: the afternoon was also improved by the delicious smell of my signature curry in the slow cooker! Excellent end to the day.

Jason Paige – Pokémon Theme (Gotta Catch ‘Em All)
Cast of Les MiserablesDo You Hear The People Sing?
Vangelis – Chariots Of Fire

parkrun tourism: Jesmond Dene

I went to the inaugural Jesmond Dene parkrun this morning – a stunning new parkrun in one of Newcastle’s most beautiful areas. I’d been looking forward to this parkrun since it was first announced earlier this year that Newcastle would be getting two new parkruns (the first being Leazes in the summer).

Jesmond Dene parkrun
I don’t usually take these touristy ‘me with the parkrun banner’ photos, but as it was a special event and I had a willing photographer (thanks Geth), I made an exception!

It’s a good thing that the Dene is so nice to look at, because the first two kilometres of the course are absolutely brutal. It’s a difficult hill, followed by a lot of precarious ups and downs, followed by some steps up to the next level, followed by the most taxing hill I’ve ever encountered on a parkrun (worse than Pendle). Thankfully, this is followed by a flat-but-exposed couple of kilometres doing laps of a park, and the final 500 metres is a glorious downhill sprint to the finish.

You’d have to be very careful running the course on a wet autumn day with lots of leaf mulch underfoot, and I think if it iced over in the winter the parkrun would have to be cancelled that week – because if someone slipped on one of those steep downhill sections, they could be pretty badly hurt! I’ll be attending again quite a few times over the next couple of months, so it’ll be interesting to see how the run copes with varying weather conditions.

It’ll also be interesting, now that we have three parkruns in central Newcastle, to see if the congestion eases significantly on the Town Moor over the next few months!

Ready for the weekend…

…though it won’t be that different from the last few weekdays, I imagine, seeing as I’m so caught up in my text adventure project at the moment!

There will be quite a bit of running (and running TV), though. Currently catching up with the Great Scottish Run and the Cardiff Half Marathon on iPlayer, then will be getting up super early tomorrow to watch the start of Eliud Kipchoge’s 1:59:59 marathon attempt. Geth and I will then be nipping out to run a brand new parkrun, and then back home to catch up with the rest of the Kipchoge event (I expect we’ll have been spoilered for the result by the time we leave parkrun, but it’ll still be great to watch!). I’m also planning a slightly longer amble on Sunday, as I’m trying to do three runs a week at the moment.

I think it was the right decision not to run any races post-GNR this autumn, as I’m finding I’m still really excited about my running right now (as opposed to crawling away screaming at the end of the season and taking two months off like I have done the last couple of years!).

There will also be a bit of videogaming, I hope, if I can drag myself away from making my own one.

parkrun barcode
Not an OOTD: brand new parkrun barcode printed out ready for tomorrow – my old one is getting a bit worn and hasn’t been scanning properly for the last few weeks!

Today’s earworm playlist:

Jason Paige – Pokémon Theme (Gotta Catch ‘Em All)
Bobby Darin – Beyond The Sea
Duran Duran – Liberty
John Parr – St. Elmo’s Fire (Man In Motion)
