End of big running and the start of winter training

Just a mile today…

…because I started an eight-week 10k training programme today and the first day of the plan was a rest day! Intervals tomorrow. I’m planning to do this eight-week programme twice during the winter – the first will finish with a 10k race on 6th December (there’s a small local COVID-secure one I’d like to do, but if restrictions get worse and/or it’s called off for any reason then I can always sign up to another virtual), then I’ll have a break from focused training over Christmas, then I’ll start the programme all over again in January for another 10k race attempt around late February / early March. This will be the first winter since 2017/2018 that I’m not training for a spring marathon, so I’m taking advantage of the extra time – I really want a sub-hour 10k race result this next year. I managed a 1:03ish split during the Virtual GNR (because I went out far too fast!) so I know it’s perfectly possible with the right training.

We had a great weekend, with Geth running his longest run of the year on Sunday – he’s aiming for his first marathon in either autumn 2021 or spring 2022 and likes to build up the distances gradually, so his big project was to manage a 30k run this year. All achieved and he’s back on easy running for the winter.

In non-running news I am starting to get very excited about Hallowe’en. I think I will probably decorate the house at some point in the next week! I need to tidy up a bit first as the living room is still full of stuff from my decor project. Said project is on schedule to be completed and up on the wall around the first week of November – I’m just waiting on a couple more things to arrive in the post.

Hoping for a nice productive day tomorrow as there’s a lot I want to get done this week.

One of my favourite months

Just a mile today…

…as I’m still resting in preparation for Sunday. Creeping ever closer…

I’m very excited about it being October as I can now eat Hallowe’en goodies all month long. M&S didn’t have any Hallowe’en ‘Colin the Caterpillar’ sweets in yesterday, which was a bit disappointing as I wanted them for between-run snacks on Sunday, but I managed to find some seasonal chocolate in Asda for celebrating the start of spooky month tonight 🙂

Still pushing my sleep pattern forward in preparation for the weekend. Will stay up late doing a bit of work tonight and try and sleep late again tomorrow.

Best day

Another recovery mile this morning…

…followed by a nice walk in the early September sunshine. The first of September is one of my favourite days of the year – it’s the start of meteorological autumn, my favourite season, and of the part of the year starting with ‘-ber’ – the best four months of all. This autumn will probably feel a bit different, just as this spring and this summer felt a bit different, but I’m hopeful that the magic of the season will still be there. I’m still running a GNR, even if it’s virtual; the BBC are doing a truncated and socially-distanced Strictly series (the first participants are being announced tonight!); and of course no pandemic can stop me from binge-watching horror films and eating all the Hallowe’en chocolate during October!

I’m also excited about my 24-hour London Marathon challenge in October, which will keep my training focused for another month or so (Geth and I are also booked for an actual live race – the North Tyneside 10k – on the 18th of October, but we haven’t heard yet if it’s going ahead or not…).

Lots of other hopes and ambitions for the autumn months, including house decor (a few bits and pieces arriving this week!), writing (I have three potential projects for NaNoWriMo) and coding (I can’t decide which game to work on next, but I would like to release at least another two this year).

It should be a good autumn, even if it’s a quiet one. I might even make an effort to go find a Bonfire Night fireworks display this year (I usually can’t be bothered!).

In the shorter term, it looks like I’ll be fairly busy with day job work over the next few weeks, so September will probably fly by… as usual!

Pictures to go up
I am determined to get some of my pictures hung up on the wall by the end of the year, even if I don’t manage any other house projects. If nothing else, it’ll stop them cluttering up the dressing room!

Weekend dozing plans

A very early four-miler in the rain this morning…

…because I woke up at six and couldn’t get back to sleep, so I thought I might as well go for my run. It was absolutely chucking it down and it took me about two hours afterwards to stop shivering (this process involved putting the fire on in August BECAUSE OF COURSE). It’s brightened up nicely since, so I kind of wish I’d slept longer… which is the opposite of my usual sleep frustration!

I was still a bit upset this morning about the ongoing postal issues detailed yesterday (as well as some other stuff I can’t mention here) but at least waking up early meant that I had a productive morning. I managed to get most things done for the day by mid-afternoon so that I could get in the weekend mood early. The weekend will involve a lot of videogames and hopefully a lot of sleep.

I’ll post my running vlogs as usual over the weekend, and will be back for another update on Monday.

Glow bracelet cape
The distinctly autumnal weather has me thinking about autumnal things. I doubt there will be Hallowe’en parties this year so I probably won’t need a costume, and I’m not sure I’ll ever better ‘Glow Bracelet Cape Superhero’ from 2014 anyway.

Ever onwards

I felt a little bereft this morning when I finally had to put my Hallowe’en decorations away (Bonfire Night and its associated endless background bangs and flashes now being over)…but as ever, it’s a very busy time of year. I’m nearly a week into NaNoWriMo (I have no idea where that time has gone), and Geth and I have lots on over the next couple of weeks, so it’ll be December and the run-up to Christmas before we know it. Today is the first day of the year that I allow myself to think about Christmas, so we’ll be sitting down this evening and starting to make plans.

I’ve not had much time for NaNo-ing today – there’s been a bit of day job work, and I’ve still got a lot of admin to catch up with from last week. I really enjoyed ukulele class this evening though, and am now catching up with a few Strictly episodes.

Ukulele notation
Not an OOTD: we learnt another new song in ukulele class tonight! Really enjoying this term.

Back after a quick trip

Geth and I got back to Newcastle today after spending the night in Leeds for an A-ha gig. The gig was one of my favourites of 2019 and I’ll be posting a review later this week once I’ve caught up with some other review posts!

Have had a fairly relaxed afternoon catching up with all the things I didn’t do last week when I was busy finishing off my text adventure game.

Looking forward to a good few days of working on my NaNoWriMo project before the next gig!

Better late than never

It was another late night last night, but I finally got my Hallowe’en text adventure game finished and submitted! You can play and rate it here. I’ve really enjoyed making this game over the last month – it’s a Hallowe’en story that’s heavily inspired by my childhood Hallowe’ens in Scotland. (Look out for a game designer appearance – it’s set in 1987, and so my two-year-old self shows up in the story!)

I also had a good loss at Slimming World this morning – only one and a half pounds away from getting back into my target range now – although I imagine that was partly due to being too busy to eat over the last few days!

A busy weekend coming up (especially as I started the annual NaNoWriMo push today). Glad I’ll be able to have a couple of quieter days at the start of the week!

Pumpkin lantern
Not an OOTD: finally got to light my lantern today (a whole day after Hallowe’en actually happened!). Hoping that the pumpkin will stay unsquishy for a few days so I can keep it going till Bonfire Night.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Squeeze – Cool For Cats
Tina Turner – The Best
Tones & I – Dance Monkey
Sarah Brightman & Steve Harley – The Phantom Of The Opera

Happy Hallowe’en!

It’s been a busy day, despite the fact that I didn’t get out and about to the various things I’d planned! The deadline for the game jam was extended by a day so I’ve been doing a lot of extra playtesting – plus of course there was a pumpkin to carve and a lot of horror films to watch in honour of the day 🙂

I feel I’ve been so busy with the game that I’ve not really had the chance to relax and enjoy Hallowe’en yet, so I’ll be extending it over the weekend!

Pumpkin carving
Not really an OOTD ’cause you all know that jumper: I finally got to carve my pumpkin today! Normally I do them so early they’re already squishy by Hallowe’en 🙂

Today’s earworm playlist:

Duran Duran – Ordinary World
John Carpenter – Laurie’s Theme
Duran Duran – Hungry Like The Wolf
Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man

Hallowe’en is almost upon us!

Just got off the treadmill, having done my nightly ninety minutes to get my steps in. It’s a good thing I decided to set my daily step goal as an October target, because I’ve been so busy with my text adventure this week that I doubt I’d have got any exercise in otherwise! Didn’t even make it to ukulele class this evening, although I will be back with a vengeance next week.

Eight and a half hours to go until the jam deadline – and I expect I’ll be up for quite a few of those hours getting everything finished off!

Busy day tomorrow too…

Pixel lantern
Not an OOTD: I’m still loving making my pixel turnip lanterns! Much easier to make on the computer than hollowing out the real thing…
