Shelves exist now

Dad worked his shelving magic today, and we now have lots of shelves.  Tomorrow morning I will be able to begin the magical process of putting stuff on the shelves!

In other news today: maintained at Slimming World (fine), another 4,000 words on NaNo (consistent), felt slightly better but still a bit ill (improvement), went to Pilates (necessary), ate Indian food (risky in terms of feeling ill, but it was super tasty).

Phone Box Thursday: Duncombe Place, York

I love this York phone box.  I spotted it while we were running the Yorkshire 10 Mile in 2017 – the pretty bit when you’re running up towards York Minster – and went back to take a photo the next day.  I’d never have spotted it during the soaking wet Yorkshire 10 Mile 2018, but because I knew it was there, I gave it a wave.

Great phone box – one of my favourites.

Update 19th March 2026: while adding in the coordinate link, I noticed that this is now a defibrillator box!

It’s shelving time again!

I get to do some home improving this week, which is very exciting!

Mum and Dad arrived today and we went to B&Q to get some shelving supplies.  Over the next couple of days, we (i.e. Dad) are going to be building shelves in the study.  This will mean I can finally put the following things on shelves:

  1. Our CD collection (which may be pared down if it doesn’t fit on the particular area of shelving we’re building for it).
  2. The rest of our books (almost all of which are my ‘stack’ from uni – Spanish, German, Gaelic, Classical Greek, linguistics, European history, and ancient history.  I changed subjects a lot at uni).
  3. The giant pile of paperwork that I need to scan and then shred, because I want to keep the info but not the physical paper.  This will probably take years, and so I need some shelves for it all to sit on in the meantime.

It also means the study will be vaguely usable, which will be nice!

(I also got another 4,000 words written on my NaNo novel this morning.  Keeping up that streak!)

Early Tuesday post

An early post today, because Geth and I are having guests round for boardgaming this evening.  After doing some editing work this morning, I got another 4,000 words done on my NaNo novel – but I’m only halfway through today’s chapter!  Hopefully I’ll be able to get some more writing done late tonight – if not, I’ll have to catch up over the next few days.  I do have a few days’ leeway throughout the month – twenty-six planned chapters in thirty days – so it will all be fine.

I’ve got a busy few days ahead, so posts will probably be similarly early for the rest of this week!

A running and writing day

10 miles run this morning, 4,000-ish words on my NaNo novel written this afternoon (taking me to over 20,000 in total).  I’m very sleepy now.

I’ve also not had much of an appetite today, which doesn’t help.  I expect it’ll be a fairly early night.

Looking forward to another productive day tomorrow, though!

Quiet Sundays are the best

I’ve settled into a nice routine the last few weekends, and today’s quiet Sunday gave me the opportunity to get another 4,000 words done on my NaNo novel, taking me up to 16,000.  I feel as if I could keep this going and end up with 120,000 words this month if I had to, but I don’t think I need quite as many words as that to finish the novel!  We’ll see.

Other than that, I had my usual nice Sunday TV evening of Doctor Who and the Strictly results, and we’ve now got triathlon TV on in the background.

OOTD 4th November 2018

TV Review: Doctor Who: The Tsuranga Conundrum

Episode five, and this one was my favourite in the series yet!

The Doctor and companions wake up on a hospital ship after being caught by a sonic mine while scavenging (bit of a new hobby for the Doctor).  Unfortunately, the hospital ship is rerouted through an unusual sector of space due to some asteroid activity, and so it picks up a Pting, a creature that passively kills people on spaceships due to the fact it eats all the essential parts of the ship.  The Doctor manages to get all the passengers working together and eventually gets rid of the Pting by realising that it seeks energy and letting it eat the ship’s self-destruct bomb.

Even though the episode’s set on a ship, it’s a very classic base-under-siege style story due to the fact that the characters have very limited control over the ship’s flight.  The concept of a creature that eats everything non-organic is a bit comedic by Doctor Who standards – it kind of reminded me of Nibbler in Futurama – but I did think it worked here, and I also liked that the Doctor managed to solve the problem without destroying the creature (although this does beg the question of what happens when it finally stops gorging itself on the energy from the bomb!).

I was a bit worried when we first saw Eve Cicero and her robot buddy Ronan being all secretive about something, as I thought that they were going to be the kind of annoying semi-villains you get in Doctor Who that impede the Doctor’s efforts to save everyone’s lives.  Happily, this did not turn out to be the case, and the Doctor quickly got everyone on the same team and working to their strengths, which was a nice punch-the-air moment.

More good characterisation for Ryan and Graham in this episode, as their interaction with pregnant dude Yoss was very funny.  Male pregnancy is not something we’ve seen in Doctor Who before, I don’t think, but it was done really well – it was both comedic and touching, and I loved the juxtaposition between Yoss changing his mind about keeping his baby and Ryan realising why his own dad has made so many mistakes.  We’re back to Yasmin being a bit ‘generic female companion’, but next week’s ‘go back in time and meet a family member’ story looks like a really strong episode for her, with shades of Rose in Father’s Day back in 2005.

A historical episode next week!  That should be good.

Still getting off to a good NaNo start!

Another 4,000 words written today, taking my NaNo novel to over 12,000 words so far!  I really feel like I’m in the zone at the moment, and like I could easily keep this up every day, even when I have other things to do.  Could be a good year!

More of the same tomorrow.

OOTD 3rd November 2018

A free Friday

I had all day today free for working on my NaNo novel.  IT WAS AMAZING.  I’m now sitting at over 8,000 words – I’ve never been so far ahead on day two before!

Geth and I are skipping parkrun tomorrow, so I’m looking forward to another productive writing day.

NaNoWriMo begins, and another Slimming World award!

It’s been a really good day today, even if it wasn’t quite the start to NaNoWriMo that I wanted!

I was so keen to get writing that I stayed up past midnight last night to start November with a couple of paragraphs, and then managed to get some more done before I went to Slimming World this morning.  I lost half a pound this week, taking me back into target range (I swear staying in range is harder than getting to target in the first place!), and was also delighted when my group voted me their Miss Slinky 2018!  I got some lovely flowers and a certificate.  I felt a bit embarrassed though as it’s the third award I’ve won this year – next year I’ll be happy for someone else to have a chance!

When I got home, I found a client had sent me some urgent work to do, so I got that done and then managed to squeeze in another hour of writing before I had to go to Pilates.  After Pilates (and a detour to the pub to meet Geth), I was finally able to get into my writing properly, and have just finished for the day.  I’ve managed nearly 4,000 words on my NaNo novel today, which puts me well on track for my goal this month (my aim is not just to get the standard 50,000 words for the month but also finish the draft, which I’m expecting to take closer to 80,000 words).  Not bad for a mostly-interrupted day!  Looking forward to a more solid day of writing tomorrow.
