Race Review: Blaydon Race 2022

It was really nice being back to do the Blaydon Race for the first time since 2019 (it went virtual in 2020 and 2021 and I didn’t bother doing those), but I wasn’t expecting much from my own performance. Eleven days after Edinburgh I still had a slight bit of marathon in my legs, and I never feel quite right physically at Blaydon – because it’s always on the 9th of June to match the song, it’s usually a weekday evening, and I’m a morning runner. Evening running doesn’t suit me due to my eating schedule!

Pre-race
Baggage bus set off from Gateshead this year – just the other side of the Millennium Bridge.

This year was no exception and I had a semi-stitch all the way round. I also had stitch-like pain in my neck and shoulders for a good mile or two around the middle of the race, which was a bit alarming. Nausea issues not gone yet either – I didn’t take any water at the midway water station because I knew it would make things worse, and I felt really sick again on the way home. Clearly something is a bit wrong at the moment seeing as I can’t run more than four or five miles without feeling nauseous!

Nevertheless, it was really nice to experience the Blaydon atmosphere again (and also a bit tedious to be reminded of all the usual Blaydon issues, such as starting 20-25 minutes late – plus a new bonus issue for 2022 in the shape of the race numbers being made out of a type of paper that disintegrated easily). I’m also really proud of myself for keeping up a bit of pace the whole way round, despite my issues. I went off too fast, but didn’t slow down too horribly, and I kept running even when things were tough (which gave me a bit of much-needed confidence after what happened at Edinburgh). I finished in 1:11:42, which I’m pleased with considering recent paces. It’s a longer course now too – 6.11 miles according to my Garmin (it used to be about 5.7 miles).

I won’t be done with Blaydon until I can get my sub-hour on it (and the course is so close to 10k now that this goal will have to go hand in hand with the sub-hour 10k goal, probably). I expect that’ll be a few years off, but it’s nice to have something to aim for!

Game to run and back

Bit of an out-of-sorts day coming up tomorrow as I’ve got the Blaydon Race in the evening, which means I won’t be doing my usual daily run in the morning. That’ll feel strange! But it means I can get stuff done first thing, which I’m not used to.

I’m very nearly done with my current game incarnation – just a few things to sort this evening and then I can send it to the next round of testers. Glad to be hitting that milestone as it’s taken a bit longer than expected.

Plans make everything better

Geth and I have got quite a lot happening over the summer, as I might have mentioned. Summers were always busy in the past but this is something I need to get used to again after a couple of quieter pandemic years. My natural ‘happy place’ is sitting on my sofa at home – going out and doing things is always lovely when I get there, but I find it quite difficult being out of my usual routine.

I do always feel better when things are planned out though. We’re doing a short trip this weekend and Geth has done the itinerary for it today, meaning I’m quite excited for it now (because I can visualise much better what I’ll be doing – and, importantly, where I’m running!).

What day is it again?

The long weekend has confused my internal clock (something easily done) and I keep thinking it’s Tuesday today. Yesterday I kept thinking it was Saturday.

Either way it’s been a good day. I had a sports massage at the physio (and got some more advice for honing my strength training routine). After work I was also able to work on my game for a bit. Progress every day!

Summer week two

Quick post tonight as I’m just sorting a few things out after game-making all day. It’ll be nice to get back into routine tomorrow… for a little while at least.

Still excited about bumbling along the Blaydon Race this next week. Four days to go!

parkrunday: Jesmond Dene #61

Back to parkrun this week, and back to slightly speedier running. I managed a couple of minutes faster than I had been doing in the latter stages of marathon training, so I’m happy with that.

parkrun finish token
Blurry finish token shot today! I forgot to take a parkrun selfie as Geth was doing post-run barcode scanning and I was waiting for him to finish.

I realised about ten minutes after we left the house that I’d forgotten my barcode. Thankfully, a) they accept barcodes on phones nowadays and b) even if they didn’t, I keep a scraggy old barcode under the right sole of the shoes I usually wear for parkrun. Today was their final outing after 550ish miles and the barcode-forgetting incident has reminded me to swap the scraggy barcode into my new shiny pair of tempo shoes later this week.

I’ve decided to change my official home parkrun from Town Moor to Jesmond Dene. It’s nice to visit the Moor for a bit of a speed session now and then, but I’m in the Dene most weeks and I prefer it.

However, it’ll be a few weeks of different parkruns now. Summer is a time for exploring!

Summer is here

It crept up on me this year because I’ve been so preoccupied with marathon training and coding stuff since January. But it’s now warm-ish, I’ve not slept well for a few weeks because of the light, the spring marathon is done and I have a packed couple of months of mini-trips lined up. Including going abroad for the first time in four years! It’ll be really strange to be on planes again.

However, for the moment, Geth and I are back home in Newcastle after a nice few days in Edinburgh recovering from the marathon. A quiet-ish weekend beckons if you don’t count the jubilee stuff going on in our street and at parkrun and on the TV!

Runniversary day

Global Running Day today coincided with my seventh runniversary! Seven years since I started running on 1st June 2015. I’m still very much in marathon recovery mode but I did manage my basic one-mile plod to celebrate.

I’ve mentally recovered enough now that I’m able to work on my game again and have made a start today. Looking forward to curling up with the project this weekend.
