Music Video Monday: Top Ten ’80s Dance Routines

I went back to dance class for the first time in about a year and a half tonight, and I’m (not) looking forward to an awkward few weeks where I struggle to keep up ’cause I’m still learning the routines. I thought I’d motivate myself by looking at some videos where everyone knows what they’re doing!

10. Kelly Marie – Feels Like I’m In Love

I can never help but smile at this silly, kitschy video in which Kelly Marie and her two sailor friends go dancing around Central London for a bit of shore leave sightseeing.

9. Lionel Richie – Dancing On The Ceiling

Lionel and his fabulously-dressed ’80s friends decide the floor is not good enough and go stamping all over the walls and ceiling, causing a disturbance on the next floor up! The ceiling dancing effect is a bit hokey nowadays (you can tell the exact angle to which the set has just been spun when the dancers awkwardly clamber from wall to ceiling), but it’s still a highly entertaining watch.

8. Wham! – Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

A lot of colourful dancing here, mainly from stalwart Wham! backing singers Pepsi and Shirlie plus a couple of extra friends, but it’s the day-glo UV lights sequence (long before it became trendy in videos of the early ’10s!) complete with dancing feet that I love about this video.

Wham! - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

7. David Bowie and Mick Jagger – Dancing In The Street

I still see a lot online, strangely, about how this video is OMG SCANDALOUS for some reason and not becoming of such musical luminaries (mainly from American commentators, it has to be said; Brits tend to be more ‘meh, it’s just a couple of mates pissing about having a laugh, what’s the issue here?’). Either way, you can’t have an ’80s dance video list without it, and I want to give a shout out to Mick Jagger’s Reebok Freestyles here. Freestyle wearers represent.

6. Duran Duran – Wild Boys

No dancing from the band members here (Duran Duran do not dance, apart from that bit at the end of the New Moon On Monday video that they’d like you to forget about). The dancing is instead provided by the eponymous Wild Boys, a tribe of body-painted hostiles who have kidnapped the band (or something – like most music videos, the plot’s not very clear), and was choreographed by one-time Strictly judge Arlene Phillips.

Duran Duran - Wild Boys

5. Adam & The Ants – Prince Charming

There’s a lot to like in this classic video – Adam as the male Cinderella, Diana Dors as the fairy godmother, that fancy sports car that substitutes for the pumpkin carriage – but it’s the daft dance routine that will be remembered till the end of time. Ridicule is nothing to be scared of!

Adam & The Ants - Prince Charming

4. Elton John – I’m Still Standing

Elton John’s I’m Still Standing video is the gift that keeps on giving. The entire video is basically one long dance routine, ably led by Strictly judge Bruno Tonioli and his extensive collection of skimpy beachwear. The dancers lift each other in the air! They spin effortlessly on stairwells! They fall over on the beach! I could watch it a thousand more times and I’d probably still be picking up extra details.

Elton John - I'm Still Standing

3. Bananarama – Love In The First Degree

Bananarama are the ’80s queens of not-entirely-serious dance routines (their brilliantly half-arsed shuffle in the café in Really Saying Something is another of my favourites), and this cartoony prison-set video, complete with striped prisoner garb, balls and chains, and obvious stunt double backflips, is a shining example. Bonus points for the song being on the legendary Now! That’s What I Call Music #10 compilation.

Bananarama - Love In The First Degree

2. Kim Carnes – Bette Davis Eyes

Another wonderfully odd early ’80s dance routine where the dancers spend a lot of time artistically slapping each other and then rhythmically slamming their palms against the floor in some kind of apparent protest. Great video.

1. Michael Jackson – Thriller

Come on. What else could it have been?

When I became a horror film buff in the late ’90s/early ’00s I was utterly fascinated with this video and the way it homaged so many horror tropes. Vincent Price’s narration in the middle of the song over the zombies crawling out of their graves is a highlight, but there’s a reason why the dance routine is still taught in Zumba classes all over the world every time Hallowe’en rolls around. It’s an absolute classic, and I love the story of how director John Landis insisted on the dancers having two weeks of rehearsals (not the norm at the time) so that they would be absolutely in sync with each other and therefore creepier. No video will ever better this one.

More music videos next week.

A quiet Sunday

No need to go out today, so I was able to have a lazy morning reading and then catch up with a few admin-type things and a bit of day job work in the afternoon. Geth and I have had a go at a new boardgame (Lord of the Rings: Adventures in Middle Earth – we’ll be doing the full campaign soon) this evening, but otherwise I will just be doing a bit more reading.

Back to work tomorrow.

Eyeball of the living dead

I spent a long, boring morning in the hospital waiting room today (luckily I had my 3DS with me). Zombie Eye 2, as expected, is uveitis. As such, I’m back on the hourly eye drops. The good thing is that I caught it sooner this time round so it’s not yet at such a severe level as the first attack. This means I only have to take a five-week course of drops rather than an eight-week course! Fingers crossed I will finally defeat the zombie invasion for good this time.

Geth and I are going out for his belated birthday meal tonight, so I’m getting all my admin done this afternoon. A quieter day tomorrow I hope.

OOTD 22nd June 2019
OOTD: Zombie Eye 2 is not dealing well with the sun, hence the sunglasses. Damn your eyes

No New Hits Friday today as Geth is coming home and we’re doing belated birthday celebrations. I’ll catch up with the chart over the weekend!

I’ve just spent today getting admin and writing done otherwise. I also called the hospital, because much as I would have loved the eye saga to be over after I finally finished the course of eye drops this week, it appears the uveitis has now shown up in the other eye. Perfect timing. 🙁 As such, I will be spending tomorrow morning in the waiting room of the eye clinic again.

Hopefully the treatment itself will be as straightforward as last time.

OOTD 21st June 2019
OOTD: I really appreciate that the weather has warmed up this week! Jacket unknown brand (estimated vintage 1990s, bought at vintage shop 2003), t-shirt Campus Crew for Toronto Blue Jays (2018), jeans Vivid (2018), trainers Reebok (2017).

The Four Bucketeers – The Bucket Of Water Song

Slow progress

I lost a measly half a pound at Slimming World this morning. I was hoping for more and am a bit annoyed. Still, I felt I was on track all week because of doing a food diary, so I’ve decided to keep doing them until I get back into my target range. I always log my food anyway, but doing an actual diary that you have to hand in makes everything more accountable.

I’ve had a good day of writing otherwise, and have got some music practice in too. Hoping for another productive day tomorrow, because I’ve got a lot to do before Geth gets back from Oslo tomorrow evening.

OOTD 20th June 2019
OOTD: summer version of my Thursday uniform! Jacket unknown brand (estimated vintage 1990s, bought at vintage shop 2003), vest top Primark (2018), leggings Primark (2018), trainers Reebok (2013).

Phone Box Thursday: Charlton Park Lane, London

It’s the first of the London Marathon phone boxes! I warn you that we’ll be here in London for about the next four or five months. I took a LOT of phone box photos while running the London Marathon.

(Coordinates 51°48’02.5″N, 0°05’25.7″E.)

This phone box showed up around the two-mile marker. It’s a bit vandalised and overgrown, but that’s fairly standard for a suburban phone box – it’s difficult for councils to keep on top of maintaining them. Still a welcome sight early in the race!

Still tapping away

I’m still sleeping late, but I’m just about managing to get everything done. Today was all about editing for clients and doing my own writing until it was time to go out to ukulele class.

I’m now chilling out with music and books. Hoping for a good result at Slimming World tomorrow as I’ve been really strict this week.

OOTD 19th June 2019
OOTD: the weeping willow in the garden is finally starting to grow back! Jacket unknown brand (estimated vintage 1990s, bought at vintage shop 2003), blouse KDS Collection (vintage 1980s, bought at vintage fair 2017), skirt Calvin Klein Jeans (2004), tights Primark (2017), trainers Reebok (2017).

Duran Duran – Union Of The Snake
Madonna – Hollywood

Music Review: Madonna: Madame X

There’s been a lot of buzz around Madonna’s new album, which apparently has a bit of a Portuguese flavour. I’ve always liked the more Latin-inspired stuff she’s done, so I decided to give this one a listen.

Madonna - Madame X

Medellín

A fairly chilled-out beat to start the album – the backing track is fairly quiet, meaning it’s all about Madonna’s wistful vocals and Maluma’s Spanish rap.

Dark Ballet

Nice piano backing on this one – it gives it a really nice atmosphere. That solo in the middle, with the electronic interpolation of The Nutcracker Suite, is really interesting!

God Control

I like the choral backing vocals, which again are really atmospheric. The melody is a bit repetitive, but it sort of works here. More interesting instrumentals as well, which segue into a nice ’90s dance beat in the middle.

Future

This is probably the most modern-sounding track of the album so far, partly due to the guest vocals from Quavo. I like the reggae beat, but in terms of the current musical landscape it’s a bit generic.

Batuka

Fairly repetitive call-and-response vocals, but there’s a good atmospheric beat in the background.

Killers Who Are Partying

More pretty old-timey piano backing on this one, which has a lovely tune.

Crave

I like the guitar line here – again, with Swae Lee on guest vocals, it’s quite a modern-sounding track that would fit in with current chart music.

Crazy

A nice slow beat here, with more modern-sounding vocals. Love that ‘like a prayer’ lyrical callback!

Come Alive

Really nice rhythm on this one, which has a summery chilled out feel.

Extreme Occident

Gorgeous piano on the backing instrumentals, lovely tune. The vocal line is beautiful too.

Faz Gostoso

Another track that fits well into ’10s Latin pop – I fully expect to hear this one emanating from every Zumba classroom soon!

Bitch I’m Loca

Another Latin-tinged duet with Maluma, with a good danceable rhythm.

I Don’t Search I Find

Nice ’90s-tinged dance beat here that slightly reminds me of the Ray Of Light album.

Looking For Mercy

Slow and atmospheric – I really like this track.

I Rise

Another slow-ish track to finish the album – it builds nicely, but I find the tune a bit uninspired.

Overall it’s a very interesting album with a lot of variety. I’ll be coming back to this one.

Sunshine walks part two: medical errands edition

I had a doctor’s appointment this morning (I needed to renew my regular medication) and then a quick trip to the hospital afterwards to pick up some hearing aid batteries. Nice to listen to some podcasts in the sunshine!

Day job work and writing all afternoon, and now settling in for the evening with some music.

OOTD 18th June 2019
OOTD: errand-running outfit. Hoodie Sonar (2006), t-shirt Punk Masters (2018), skirt Gap (2007), tights Primark (2017), shoes Zara (2018).

Today’s earworm playlist:

Queen – We Are The Champions
Duran Duran – All Along The Water
Bronski Beat – Hit That Perfect Beat
Ed Sheeran – You Need Me, I Don’t Need You

Booze Alternative: Bundaberg Ginger Beer

I found this one in our local pub – the pub that I was getting a bit disillusioned with when I was still drinking, because their cider selection wasn’t as good as it used to be. That’s no longer a concern, obviously, and I’m pleased that they’ve got a good alcohol-free option for me to have now that I’m sober.

It’s got a really lovely taste – it’s not super spicy, but it’s very nice. Definitely one I’ll be drinking a lot of!
