Back on the moor

I did parkrun for the first time today since the 27th of October, which is a bit alarming. My time is obviously quite a bit slower at the moment from what I was managing last summer, but I should be able to build it up again over the next few months.

A day off for the rest of today, sort of! I’ve been reading about writing rather than doing actual writing. I feel kind of anxious about that, like I should be doing proper work, but I did say I’d try and give myself weekends off this year. I also got some more books logged on Goodreads (I’m trying to do our whole collection at the moment) and caught up with a year’s worth of a webcomic I’d been neglecting. All good semi-productive weekend activities.

Slightly busier day tomorrow!

Book Review: Riders

In the mid-’00s, I used to watch the BBC programmes Grumpy Old Men and Grumpy Old Women, which involved older celebrities complaining about the modern world and was very funny. One of the contributors to the latter was Jilly Cooper, who always came across as quite jolly and cheery despite the show’s title. I made a mental note that I should probably give one of her books a go some day.

Because I am a terrible procrastinator, it took me over a decade to get round to it, meaning I downloaded Riders on my Kindle and thus had no sense of how long it might be (one of the disadvantages of ebooks). It’s long. It’s super long. 278,000 words of long, according to the internet. I’d actually be interested to see a physical copy, ’cause it’s probably a real doorstopper.

Riders

The story is a saga about showjumpers and their love lives that spans the ’70s, culminating in a finale set at the 1980 Olympics. There are what feels like hundreds of characters, and almost every single one of them is an awful human being. The one exception is treated so abysmally by the other characters that she ends up attempting suicide towards the end of the book. None of the others get any kind of comeuppance whatsoever, which is a bit frustrating when you’ve spent 278,000 words really hating them and are looking forward to the freak fire that burns all of them to death in a glorious blaze of justice.

Oh, hang on, there were some other characters that I liked! They were all horses though.

The book’s apparently famous for its sexual content, but in all honesty it’s fairly tame by today’s standards, and the characters are so horrible that it’s just depressing anyway.

I thought I might read the whole series, but I think one will probably do me.

Still writing

I’ve spent all day editing one of my writing projects, which has been nice. The project is probably my favourite of all the ones I’m working on at the moment, so I’ve found I’ve been neglecting the others this week. Like I said yesterday, there’s good procrastination and bad procrastination!

Now for an evening of celebrating the arrival of Geth’s sabbatical, which means he will be spending the next few months working from home without being encumbered by teaching or admin. I’ve got some good booze alternatives in to make things feel celebratory.

No Burns Supper tonight, which is the second year in a row I’ve neglected the occasion. I do have some Diet Irn-Bru to make up for it.

Procrastination

I’m still not getting the stuff I’m supposed to be doing done in that Thursday afternoon gap between Slimming World and Pilates. After an inspiring class last night, the draw of my ukulele was too much* and I spent all afternoon practising instead of getting on with my writing work. I didn’t even have the excuse of an early run tiring me out today!

Oh well. Just need to rejig my schedule for tomorrow and I should be back on track. Anyway, I suppose ‘music practice’ procrastination is better than ‘mindless browsing the web’ procrastination.

*This is mainly because I cannot get the songs we’ve been playing in class out of my head (see earworm playlist below) – and the version that gets in my head is my own badly played ukulele performance rather than the actual song! If this is going to continue, I at least need to get marginally better at the songs so that there aren’t as many duff notes in my earworms. I hate my brain.

Phone Box Thursday: Port of Tyne International Passenger Terminal, North Shields

This is another phone box that Dad spotted while travelling!

Red phone box
Red phone box, Port of Tyne International Passenger Terminal, North Shields, 19th August 2016.

(Coordinates 54°99’32.9″N, 1°45’08.2″W.)

You can’t quite get into the ferry terminal on Google Street View, but you can just about see the phone box from the parallel road.

Despite the fact that it’s a local phone box to me, I’ve not seen this one in person, due to the fact that I don’t travel by ferry very often. If I ever do, I’ll look out for it!

Update August 2025: it’s been moved to a different part of the terminal!

Update 2nd April 2026: updated coordinate link.

A busy Wednesday

I got lots of work done today! Five writing projects worked on, one appointment made, one ukulele class attended. Ukulele class is still moving nice and fast and I have lots of new songs to practise this week.

It’s freezing and icy outside so I’m skipping my run tomorrow, but I’m going to rejig things for next week ’cause I can’t afford to be a fairweather runner during marathon training.

Book Review: I’m OK – You’re OK

Geth and I have a good-sized pile of classic productivity and self-help books that were donated to us by Dad a few years back. Last year, when I was going through our books after the move, this one caught my eye, and I put it aside for reading.

I'm OK - You're OK

It’s about human psychology, which I always find quite interesting – it focuses on the way that our experiences in the first five years of childhood, during which we are constantly told that we’re doing things wrong and are therefore ‘not OK’, form problematic habits in feeling and thinking that last into adult life. It also gives advice about ways of mitigating this problem – for instance, understanding that others’ reactions may be coming from their ‘not OK’ child inside – although I didn’t find that part hugely helpful.

The book was written in the ’60s, and so a lot of the context is hugely dated nowadays (for instance, an example of conflict is given where a white man gets upset about his daughter bringing a black boyfriend home, and this is presented as a normal thing!). As such, I’d be keen to read a modern discussion of what is introduced in this book, as I think it is an interesting way of looking at things.

Other worlds

I got in my Tuesday speed run this morning. The last couple of Tuesdays it wasn’t much of a ‘speed run’, but today I did finally feel like I could go a bit faster.

I’ve spent the rest of the day working on various different fiction projects. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s a bit difficult to keep my head straight when I’m juggling so many at once, but I’m so enthused about them all that I’m really enjoying it.

More reading tonight! I love winter and its potential for hibernation.

Booze Alternative: San Pellegrino Limonata

I’d heard some good things about San Pellegrino as a booze alternative, so when Geth met me for a drink at the Sage Gateshead bar last Wednesday before my ukulele class, I decided to try one.

San Pellegrino Limonata
San Pellegrino Limonata.

I went for the Limonata flavour. Unfortunately I found it a bit sour for my taste – I prefer ‘special’ drinks to be sweeter – so I probably wouldn’t have it again. I’m interested to try the other San Pellegrino flavours though!

A quiet Monday

I was able to have a full day of writing today, which I always really appreciate. Nothing much else to report, other than the fact I’ve got another glorious evening of books + sofa + scented candles to look forward to!
