She bangs the eardrums

As part of my hearing aid earmould replacement saga, I had to go to the GP this morning to get my ears syringed. I have had a lot of procedures done to my ears during my life, but I’ve never had to have irrigation done before. Due to my stupidly deformed inner ear workings, it was really uncomfortable – my extra-problematic left ear started bleeding during the procedure, and my extra-sensitive right ear has been aching for the rest of the day.

I also made the mistake of consulting Dr Internet afterwards, which told me that you should never have ear irrigation carried out if you have deformed eardrums, and now I’m a bit paranoid because nobody told me that before I went ahead with it.

Anyway, a combination of paracetamol and time seems to have helped with the pain, so I will head back to the hospital tomorrow in the hope that they’ll take the earmould impressions this time. One of my cracked moulds actually split in half when I was putting my aids in this morning, making it a bit uncomfortable to wear, so hopefully I’ll be able to get the replacement moulds sooner rather than later.

The rest of the day has been spent catching up with writing and editing. It’s going to be a bit of a hectic week, but I’ve got everything scheduled in – just need to keep zipping along.

Adventures with old buildings

After a long walk (the Metro wasn’t running today!) and a quick vintage fair session this morning, I met up with Mum, Dad and Geth again and we headed off in the car to see some local archaeology-related stuff. First up was Derwentcote Steel Furnace, an 18th century structure that was apparently featured on an episode of Time Team at some point.

Derwentcote Steel Furnace
I’m guessing the ground was originally slightly lower!

We then headed to the Land of Oak & Iron visitor centre, mainly because they had a coffee shop and everyone wanted a coffee. They did also have some wall features.

Stuff that used to exist in the area!

They also had this bell, which might have come from a Napoleonic warship, but it’s been lost and recovered so many times that nobody’s really sure.

It’s also not enough of a bell to ring anymore.

Finally, we headed to Corbridge to see the excavated Roman town there. We’d missed the opening hours, but there’s so much of it you can still see the buildings from outside.

Corbridge Roman Town
Lots of Roman streets!

After that, it was back to Newcastle for Italian food and more ginger beer. It’s been a nice weekend, but I should definitely get back to normal eating tomorrow!

Out on the town

I did my long run this morning instead of going to parkrun, as I won’t have time for a long run tomorrow. I’m getting used to the treadmill now, and it feels a lot more manageable for hours-long runs than pounding the pavements, especially seeing as I’ve got all these BBC4 music documentaries that I need to clear off the digibox.

After my run, I did a bit of tidying and then headed into town to meet up with Mum and Dad (and Geth, who’d been at a gaming tournament all morning). We had a couple of drinks (and I was gratified to find that ginger beer was available everywhere I went) and then went for a meal at El Torero, a tapas place that is one of my favourite restaurants in Newcastle. There’s lots of veggie options and the food is quite Slimming World-friendly (I just need to syn the oil they cook it in…and the cheesecake I inevitably have at the end!).

More adventures about town tomorrow.

The twelve-eyed monster

Being very short-sighted, I’m always carrying around a ridiculous number of ‘pairs of eyes’ with me – regular glasses, old glasses for running (my regular ones don’t fit into my Croakies), daily disposable contact lenses for dressy occasions, prescription sunglasses to swap out with my regular glasses on sunny days, and non-prescription sunglasses to wear over my contact lenses when dressy occasions coincide with sunny days. It’s not the whole collection, but it’s not far off.

Today involved a trip to the optician for a double feature contact lens check and eye test, as Boots have been holding my contact lenses hostage while my details have been out of date. This meant that they also tried to get me to update my glasses, but my prescription’s not changed enough that I feel I desperately need new ones, so I’ll leave it until later in the year.

The rest of the day has mainly involved editing for clients, writing, and listening to radio shows and podcasts. I’m now looking forward to a weekend with family.

Gradual progress

A typical busy Thursday. I did my speed run first thing, went to Slimming World (another half a pound off this week, still crawling slowly back to target range), and then went to Pilates in the evening. That’s our current Pilates course finished, so the next couple of Thursdays will be slightly less busy.

Geth and I didn’t buy cards or really do anything for Valentine’s Day (we normally have takeaway, but we’re trying to avoid that now we’re both on Slimming World), but he did bring me back some tasty ginger beers last night, so I’m enjoying one now.

Another hectic day tomorrow! Hoping next week will be a little more sedate.

A productive Wednesday

Another good, productive day of editing, followed by a lot of new stuff learnt at ukulele class. I’m really happy with the speed of progress in our classes – every week there’s something new to practice.

The usual busy Thursday tomorrow, but I’m still planning to squeeze in some editing.

Close to the edit

I did another treadmill run this morning, which means I’m getting through my recorded TV programmes at a good pace!

I also got a couple of editing jobs done for clients – as I said yesterday, it’s nice to have ‘day job’ work again after a quiet month – and then got on with my own editing. I was nervous about hacking down my novel wordcount as I wasn’t sure there would be much I could cut without losing story content, but I’m actually finding it a lot easier and more satisfying than expected. I should have a pitchable manuscript by the end of the month at this rate.

I also tried out the slow cooker that Geth and I won in the raffle at Slimming World last week. I made curry, and it was delicious. I’m going to leave it for an extra hour or so next time, though, as the potatoes weren’t quite as done as I would have liked.

More editing work to do tomorrow – both for clients and for myself.

OOTD 12th February 2019
OOTD: it’s my comfiest dress again. Dress Triumph (vintage 1980s, bought at vintage fair 2018), belt H&M (2017), tights Primark (2017), boots Moda In Pelle (2018).

A quiet Monday

A fairly relaxed start to the working week. I did some admin for a client I’m editing for tomorrow (I’m quite glad to have editing work again as the last month has been pretty dead!) and then got on with my writing for the rest of the day.

Geth is out boardgaming tonight, so I’m going to take the opportunity to get on with my ukulele practice, which I’ve been neglecting a bit this week.

OOTD 11th February 2019

Twenty-four hours on holiday

Geth and I are back in Newcastle after a night in Leeds for the Tears For Fears gig! The gig was epic, and so was the restaurant we went to beforehand (Livin’ Italy), so we now have a new favourite place to eat in Leeds. There was pizza and ginger beer, both of which I will blog about soon, but it was the bruschetta that really made the meal – it was just immense.

After a relaxed morning in the hotel reading magazines (Geth had booked us on the 11:51 train back home, but my current sleeping pattern meant I was awake at 7am as usual!), we travelled back to Newcastle, and I did my Sunday long run on the treadmill. Other than the moment when I discovered the machine automatically stops after 100 minutes ’cause it doesn’t have space for longer on the time display, it was a much more enjoyable long run than having to dodge roadworks and cars like I’ve been doing for the past few weeks, so I think this is going to be my habit for the next few Sundays!

A quiet evening ahead before another week of writing and editing.

Semi-flying Saturday post

Just a quick post today as Geth and I are heading off to a gig! I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow.

(I do want to mention that I watched that Eurovision: You Decide show and the chosen UK song is not hook-y enough in my view. The show was worth watching for the Fizz and Katrina during the ‘history of UK Eurovision entries’ bit though!)
