Playlist Pick: Arctic Monkeys, ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’

Rumours of the death of Playlist Pick Wednesdays were apparently premature. New Wednesday series now starting NEXT week instead. I haven’t had time to organise it this week with the game competition deadline and everything!

Today’s playlist pick is another classic from the mid-’00s, which is a period in pop-rock for which I have been a bit nostalgic recently.

I also thoroughly recommend listening to the Anton du Beke cover in order to celebrate his long-overdue installation as a Strictly judge (for 2021 at least…):

We did a quickstep routine to this in the ‘Strictly Dance’ exercise class I attended pre-pandemic. I will get back to that class someday.

July sunshine

I’ve had a good, productive day today – lots of day job work finished, lots of admin done, another dance class ticked off (I’m already getting the hang of it again better than I was last week). Also, the in-laws have been here sorting out our garden, and I’m really excited for it to be finished tomorrow!

Geth is out boardgaming this evening, but once he gets back we’re going to finish off our Good Omens rewatch.

Looking forward to a similar day tomorrow.

Newly treated decking
Not an OOTD: another Monday spent in workout gear, another Monday where I didn’t remember to take a photo of it before showering and changing back into my pyjamas! Instead, here’s our garden, with the decking looking all clean and treated. On the fence there’s a bonus sighting of two of the enormously fat pigeons who hang around our garden (next door’s cat isn’t much of a hunter, probably because of the constant racket he makes miaowing all the time).

Today’s earworm playlist:

Gunship – The Mountain
Aerds – Deadline
Duran Duran – Do You Believe In Shame?
Andy Taylor – I Might Lie
Duran Duran – (Reach Up For The) Sunrise
Loreen – Euphoria
Tyler Lyle – Lost And Found [The Midnight Remix]
Duran Duran – The Edge Of America
Duran Duran – (I’m Looking For) Cracks In The Pavement
Duran Duran – The Reflex
Sia – Chandelier
Lauv and Troye Sivan – I’m So Tired

And a bonus track that Geth was humming earlier:

Gunship – When You Grow Up Your Heart Dies

Dancing feet

A day of small victories! Zombie Eye 2 is pretty much back to normal after a couple of days of eye drops, so it’s just a case of continuing to take them now. Also, I managed to be at my desk* at nine like I’m supposed to be, which felt like a real achievement after oversleeping for all of last week.

As such, I managed to get a lot of work done today. I then went back to dance class this evening for the first time since moving house (so nearly a year and a half!). Most of the routines were new to me so it’s going to take a few weeks of feeling useless while I pick them up, but it felt really great to be dancing again, and there was one we did at the end that I knew from before (it was one of my favourites!).

Glad to be back in routine – hoping for a similarly productive day tomorrow.

*My sofa, with my laptop, and my feet up. There are many perks to working from home.

Dance trainers
Not an OOTD: no outfit shot today because I was in workout gear all day. You can have a photo of my neglected-till-now dance trainers instead.

Today’s earworm playlist:

Gunship – Dark All Day
Queen – Flash
Dominic Fike – 3 Nights
Band Aid – Do They Know It’s Christmas?*
The Rolling Stones – It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll
Tina Turner – Proud Mary
Cast of The Greatest ShowmanThe Greatest Show
Duran Duran – Too Late Marlene
Arctic Monkeys – I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor

*I can only imagine that this unseasonal offering burrowed into my brain today as a result of my subconscious child going ‘OMG IT’S ONLY SIX MONTHS TILL CHRISTMAS EVE, BETTER LISTEN TO MY BIRTHDAY NUMBER ONE‘.

Dancing progress

I went to my sixth Strictly Dance class this evening.  It took a few weeks, as expected, but I finally feel like I’m starting to get the hang of remembering the routines.  It’s not quite as taxing as Zumba in a cardio sense, though, so I definitely need to get back to running this weekend!

And back to dancing

It wasn’t just running that took a back seat over the last couple of months – it was cardio exercise full stop.  This was mainly due to a ridiculous period at work around October to November when I was pulling 12-hour days every day for six solid weeks.  The joys of self-employment.

Exercise is always the thing that gets neglected by me in these situations, because all I want to do in the two hours I have left in the day after sleeping, eating and working is stare mindlessly at the internet.  The other thing is that the work was interfering with my scheduled exercise – I could no longer go to my Tuesday night Zumba class – so once the ridiculous work period was over, I’d got out of the habit of Zumba and was making alternative commitments for Tuesday nights.

I’ve missed dancing though, so tonight I headed off to another class that my Zumba instructor runs, a ‘Strictly Dance’ class, which is a solo dance exercise class based on ballroom and Latin steps.  I love Strictly so I really enjoyed it, probably even more than Zumba.  I’m looking forward to getting to know the routines over the course of the next few weeks.  Also, it’s earlier in the evening, so a nice bonus is that I can eat after the class rather than before and don’t have to stress about whether Geth will get home from work for tea early enough for me to avoid exercising immediately after eating.  Win-win.

Bloch dance trainers
My awesome dance trainers, which I totally bought for the functionality and not the pretty colours.

I’m definitely feeling better all round for getting my cardio back on, though my calves do hate me at the moment.
