New Hits Friday: 28th June 2019

A good level of singles chart turnover today, with eight new hits.

Mark Ronson and Camila Cabello – Find U Again

Glad to see this in the charts! I enjoyed it when I reviewed the Late Night Feelings album earlier this week.

There’s no video for the track yet.

Nicki Minaj – Megatron

Nicki Minaj has been AWOL from the charts for a while and I’ve missed her daft rap style. The tune is a bit soulless but the lyrics are fun (well, I thought so until I heard all the uncensored ones when I watched the video).

The video, similarly, is too NSFW for my taste – it does have some nice colours and neon lights, though.

Digga D and Russ – Mr Sheeen

Great title! It’s fairly standard London grime otherwise though, nothing about it really stands out.

The video is mostly about cleaning stuff, as befits the title (and there’s a launderette sequence, which I always appreciate).

Lil’ Nas X – Panini

The chorus is nice, but on the whole I find the tune a bit dull.

There’s no official video yet, but this stylish CGI robot animation has been released that is fun to watch in the meantime.

Bugzy Malone and Aitch – Kilos

I like the Spanish guitar in the background.

The first half of the video is a bit confusing – it seems to be a story about drug smuggling, but instead of drugs it’s Bugzy’s clothing line that is contraband? Possibly? Aitch shows up in the second half and it becomes a much more straightforward video about yachts and champagne.

Jay1 – Mocking It

This one was a bit too repetitive for my liking at first, but it gets more lyrically interesting on further listens.

The video contains all my least favourite clichés – twerking girls, people standing around in front of cars, and high-end shopping bags – but I do like the friend who shows up to mime the ‘you’re mocking it’ bit at the end of every verse.

Stormzy – Crown

Great atmospheric tune, love the piano.

There’s no official video yet but Stormzy has released this nice church-set live performance video.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello – Señorita

Nice Latin-tinged pop duet. Like this tune.

The video is a fairly plot-light love story where the two singers hook up and then fall out at the end for some reason.

More new hits next Friday.

New Hits Friday: 22nd-29th March 2019

Two weeks’ worth of New Hits today seeing as I didn’t manage it last week!

On the 22nd of March, there were three new hits in the chart.

Lizzo – Juice

Great classic retro-sounding tune! Really, really like this one.

The video does not disappoint – it is absolute gold, chock full of 20th century retro. I am going to be watching this over and over!

Ava Max – So Am I

Another solid pop tune from Ava Max. Good stuff!

The video is a sort of alt-tinged homage to Britney Spears’ classic 1999 video for …Baby One More Time. I really quite like it!

Marshmello and Chvrches – Here With Me

It’s a bit saccharine, and I’m missing the good synths you usually get with Chvrches, but it’s quite a nice tune, and I like the way it gets more epic on the chorus.

They’ve not released the official video yet, but they have done this placeholder one with lots of cool neon effects.

This week saw another four new hits enter the top 40.

George Ezra – Pretty Shining People

First time in the chart for this track due to George Ezra’s recent tour. Nothing to do with the similarly-titled REM song! It’s a standard nice upbeat George Ezra tune with a good singalong chorus.

The video is a fairly twee story about George being executive-meddled by some little kids. There are some excellent retro touches in the set dressing though!

Meduza – Piece Of Your Heart

Cheesy upbeat vocals over dark atmospheric instrumentals, which is a bit jarring. Good beat though.

There’s no video for this one yet.

Russ and Tion Wayne – Keisha And Becky

They really like these two women, but they don’t like the idea of putting any semblance of a tune in the track. The backing track to the rap is really dull and repetitive. I do like the reciting of the women’s names in the chorus, though.

I’ve got a horrible feeling that I already know what this video’s going to be like before I watch it.

I was right. It’s all cars and twerking girls. Highly NSFW, and not my thing.

Steel Banglez, AJ Tracey and Mostack – Fashion Week

There are some nice chilled steel drums going on in the background here, but the track in general is a bit repetitive.

There’s an awful lot of ‘sitting around on a kitchen island’ in this video! Towards the end they go outside and start standing around by a car instead, which is more familiar territory for videos in 2019.

More new hits next week!

New Hits Friday: 4th January 2019

New year, and the chart’s magically back to normal – all the Christmas songs have disappeared. Today’s new hits:

Russ – Gun Lean

It’ss a rap track with zero melody and thus not remotely my thing. There are also some grim lyrics (though it’s not nearly as bad as some others I’ve heard in the last year), meaning they didn’t play this one on the radio.

The video is a bit wealth-braggy with one of those Lamborghinis you never see in real life, but it gets bonus points for the sequence that was shot in a Sainsbury’s.

Cardi B – Money

Boring, no melody, extremely repetitive.

The video is pretty NSFW with lots of topless women wandering around some sort of weird bank.

Jax Jones and Years & Years – Play

It’s not super exciting, but there are some nice lines and I expect it will grow on me.

There’s no video for this yet.

Post Malone – Wow

Kind of dull. Could do with some more melody.

The video (for now – I’m not sure if they’ll make a live action one too) is a headache-inducing Christmas-themed animation.

Something else worth mentioning from this week’s chart: Baby Shark has made it to #6 – Top Ten for the first time! Some people must just have been watching the video all through the Christmas holidays.
