New Hits Friday: 28th June 2019

A good level of singles chart turnover today, with eight new hits.

Mark Ronson and Camila Cabello – Find U Again

Glad to see this in the charts! I enjoyed it when I reviewed the Late Night Feelings album earlier this week.

There’s no video for the track yet.

Nicki Minaj – Megatron

Nicki Minaj has been AWOL from the charts for a while and I’ve missed her daft rap style. The tune is a bit soulless but the lyrics are fun (well, I thought so until I heard all the uncensored ones when I watched the video).

The video, similarly, is too NSFW for my taste – it does have some nice colours and neon lights, though.

Digga D and Russ – Mr Sheeen

Great title! It’s fairly standard London grime otherwise though, nothing about it really stands out.

The video is mostly about cleaning stuff, as befits the title (and there’s a launderette sequence, which I always appreciate).

Lil’ Nas X – Panini

The chorus is nice, but on the whole I find the tune a bit dull.

There’s no official video yet, but this stylish CGI robot animation has been released that is fun to watch in the meantime.

Bugzy Malone and Aitch – Kilos

I like the Spanish guitar in the background.

The first half of the video is a bit confusing – it seems to be a story about drug smuggling, but instead of drugs it’s Bugzy’s clothing line that is contraband? Possibly? Aitch shows up in the second half and it becomes a much more straightforward video about yachts and champagne.

Jay1 – Mocking It

This one was a bit too repetitive for my liking at first, but it gets more lyrically interesting on further listens.

The video contains all my least favourite clichés – twerking girls, people standing around in front of cars, and high-end shopping bags – but I do like the friend who shows up to mime the ‘you’re mocking it’ bit at the end of every verse.

Stormzy – Crown

Great atmospheric tune, love the piano.

There’s no official video yet but Stormzy has released this nice church-set live performance video.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello – Señorita

Nice Latin-tinged pop duet. Like this tune.

The video is a fairly plot-light love story where the two singers hook up and then fall out at the end for some reason.

More new hits next Friday.

New Hits Friday: 10th May 2019

Five new hits in the chart this week.

Bugzy Malone – MEN2

I like the atmosphere on the backing track, and the lyrics are interesting. Nice ukulele reference too! There’s also some lovely piano in the background in the second half of the track.

The video is a bit bling ‘n’ cars focused, but it’s nice to see an artist actually driving a car rather than just standing around next to one.

Hardy Caprio and DigDat – Guten Tag

I find this one a bit dull, but there are some interesting things going on with the backing track.

The video is your typical ‘extravagant mansion’ job, complete with the obligatory standing around in front of cars that the previous video largely managed to avoid.

Logic and Eminem – Homicide

They couldn’t play this track on the radio, which gives you an idea of what the lyrical content is like (although to be honest the rapping is so fast that I can’t make it out a lot of the time). It’s not my thing either way – too repetitive and not enough melody.

There’s no video yet.

Shawn Mendes – If I Can’t Have You

Nice summery instrumentals, and the tune’s nice, but it’s a little cheesy for me.

The video is shot in black and white, which I always appreciate. Points of interest include the fancy piano, the bit in the middle with a retro film effect over the top (I approve), and the recurring backdrop that has the CN Tower printed on it (presumably a reference to the fact that Toronto is mentioned in the first verse).

Lewis Capaldi – Hold Me While You Wait

Lovely tune, great atmosphere.

There’s no official video yet, but I’ll be looking out for it when it arrives!

More new hits next Friday.
