New Hits Friday: 9th-16th August 2019

Double New Hits today as I was too busy travelling last week.

There were four new hits in the chart on the 9th of August.

Dermot Kennedy – Outnumbered

Singer-songwriter type track, a bit saccharine for me. At least it’s got a tune though!

Lots of calming wide shots and nature settings in the video, which makes me feel wintry for some reason.

Jax Jones and Bebe Rexha – Harder

Boring tune, irritating flourishes on the synth line. Pretty forgettable overall.

The video is a slightly tacky wedding story about Bebe Rexha marrying a man she probably shouldn’t, while Jax Jones is the underdressed wedding entertainment!

Aitch – Taste (Make It Shake)

More free advertising for Gucci. Nothing that stands out about this track at all.

On the second listen, Geth pointed out the unusual feature of Aitch rapping in a Northern accent, which has made the whole thing a lot better.

The video is a fairly typical slightly NSFW mashup of twerking girls, cars, and designer labels.

Ariana Grande and Social House – Boyfriend

I don’t like the weird discordant stuff going on in the intro, and the song’s pretty generic on the whole.

The video is a surreal but fun affair where Ariana is at a party in a lavish mansion, having various violent fantasies about other women. As ever, it’s the costumes that are the highlight here!

Just one new hit today.

Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla Sign – Hot Girl Summer

There’s a nice synth hook in the background, but in general the track’s pretty dull. Not worth the related meme that’s been going on all summer, certainly.

There’s no video for this one, and might not be for a while, seeing as the video shoot got shut down by the police yesterday!

More new hits next Friday.

New Hits Friday: 28th June 2019

A good level of singles chart turnover today, with eight new hits.

Mark Ronson and Camila Cabello – Find U Again

Glad to see this in the charts! I enjoyed it when I reviewed the Late Night Feelings album earlier this week.

There’s no video for the track yet.

Nicki Minaj – Megatron

Nicki Minaj has been AWOL from the charts for a while and I’ve missed her daft rap style. The tune is a bit soulless but the lyrics are fun (well, I thought so until I heard all the uncensored ones when I watched the video).

The video, similarly, is too NSFW for my taste – it does have some nice colours and neon lights, though.

Digga D and Russ – Mr Sheeen

Great title! It’s fairly standard London grime otherwise though, nothing about it really stands out.

The video is mostly about cleaning stuff, as befits the title (and there’s a launderette sequence, which I always appreciate).

Lil’ Nas X – Panini

The chorus is nice, but on the whole I find the tune a bit dull.

There’s no official video yet, but this stylish CGI robot animation has been released that is fun to watch in the meantime.

Bugzy Malone and Aitch – Kilos

I like the Spanish guitar in the background.

The first half of the video is a bit confusing – it seems to be a story about drug smuggling, but instead of drugs it’s Bugzy’s clothing line that is contraband? Possibly? Aitch shows up in the second half and it becomes a much more straightforward video about yachts and champagne.

Jay1 – Mocking It

This one was a bit too repetitive for my liking at first, but it gets more lyrically interesting on further listens.

The video contains all my least favourite clichés – twerking girls, people standing around in front of cars, and high-end shopping bags – but I do like the friend who shows up to mime the ‘you’re mocking it’ bit at the end of every verse.

Stormzy – Crown

Great atmospheric tune, love the piano.

There’s no official video yet but Stormzy has released this nice church-set live performance video.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello – Señorita

Nice Latin-tinged pop duet. Like this tune.

The video is a fairly plot-light love story where the two singers hook up and then fall out at the end for some reason.

More new hits next Friday.

New Hits Friday: 14th June 2019

Eight new hits in the chart today!

Mostack and Fredo – I’m The One

Nice chilled out backing track, but the rap style is a bit harsh for my liking.

There’s no video for this one yet.

Young T, Bugsey and Aitch – Strike A Pose

I like the beat, and it is growing on me after a couple of listens.

The video is very much a ‘does what it says on the tin’ affair, with lots of underwear-clad models all posing away. It gets a point for the use of good old-fashioned film photography, plus another one for the bit at the end where the models turn the cameras on the rappers (hence providing at least a brief nod to equal-opportunity perving…I suppose?).

AJ Tracey – Ladbroke Grove

Nice upbeat backing track, and the rhythm is great.

The street sign for Ladbroke Grove does make an appearance at the start of the video, but this was definitely not filmed in London! Somewhere in north Africa, I’m guessing.

Liam Gallagher – Shockwave

This one is in the charts due to being the biggest seller on vinyl and download this week, two formats that are both in interesting states of increasing/decreasing popularity at the moment. The track is classic rock – it’s a bit generic, but I don’t care because the charts are absolutely starved for rock at the moment.

The video is very filmic and ’90s-does-’70s – in other words, it’s just like an Oasis video from the ’90s. There are flares and crappy ’70s cars everywhere, and I am all about it. Also, Liam burns down a building in a big, dramatic way, although it looks like the building is actually just a beach hut.

Avicii – Heaven

Another posthumous release from Avicii – a bit more chilled than usual. Is that Chris Martin on vocals? It’s got that Glastonbury singalong feel. (Answer: yes, as confirmed by Scott Mills after it was played. Chris Martin is uncredited for some reason.)

There’s no video for this one.

Mostack, Dave and J Hus – Stinking Rich

I like the piano on the backing track.

Again, this one doesn’t have a video at the moment.

Mabel – Mad Love

Great atmosphere on this one – I expect it’ll become a frequent earworm.

The video is a fairly standard pop video with lots of dance routines and pretty costumes. Good stuff.

Chris Brown and Drake – No Guidance

The tune’s a bit generic, but at least there is a tune.

Another one that doesn’t have a video yet.

More new hits next Friday! (Or possibly a day or so later, as Geth is back from his work trip next Friday and so we will be doing belated birthday celebrations.)
