Phone Box Thursday: ‘Let Me Go’, Lothbury, and London

I am officially out of phone box photos to share with you, so it’s a different kind of Phone Box Thursday this week!

Last year, when I was still doing Music Video Monday posts, I did a piece on Heaven 17’s ‘Let Me Go’, which is a very nice example of classic red phone box use in music videos (while you can’t actually tell that the phone box is red in this black and white video, it was made in 1982 and therefore prior to the days when councils and other organisations started repainting phone boxes in funky non-red colours, so I am pretty much 100% certain that it was red).

This week, I thought I’d track down the location of the video shoot to see if the phone box was still there! This will be a regular feature when my own phone box collection is running short, so expect a few more posts on phone boxes from music videos and TV shows in the near future.

Heaven 17 - 'Let Me Go', filmed on Lothbury, London
Red (I assume!) phone box, Lothbury, London (from Heaven 17’s ‘Let Me Go’ video, filmed in 1982).

It took me a while to track down this London street, but due to the fact that later in the video Glenn Gregory runs past the National Westminster Bank at number 41, I managed to work out that the street in question was Lothbury, with the help of this beautifully ’80s architecture pamphlet about the bank building. It is, of course, no longer a NatWest, because bank branches never stay in the same place for very long!

Here it is on Google Street View (coordinates 51°51’47.2″N, 0°08’94.8″W)…

…and woe – you can see that the phone box in question is no longer there! Looking back through the Street View historical slider, it was also not there in the earliest Street View image taken in 2008, so it’s been gone for some time, sadly.

However, if we stay in the same position on Street View and turn ourselves 180 degrees to look back along the street…

…there are a couple of classic phone boxes quite close to each other, one repainted black. So maybe one of them is the original ‘Let Me Go’ phone box and was moved by the council at some point between 1982 and 2008? You never know!

I may have some regularly-scheduled phone boxes for you next week, as Mum and Dad have identified a few more to collect in Dumfries and Galloway. Otherwise, I’ll be back in the world of ’80s music videos again!

Rabbit holes

I woke up late today, so it was just a mile again this morning…

…and a slow one to boot, but I’m okay with that. I’m just taking it as it comes now until London Marathon make their announcement.

I’ve been down a bit of a rabbit hole today (but a fun rabbit hole) doing research for tomorrow’s Phone Box Thursday post. It’s going to be interesting doing a slightly different style of post until I can get out and about and start collecting phone boxes again.

Just a couple of hours working on my coding now (I am making multiple short games at the moment, which are a lot of fun to work on!), and then I will spend a bit more time on Paper Mario tonight.

Christmas wrapping
Another potential project for the next couple of months: make some Christmas decorations out of old scraps of wrapping paper. I always intend to do stuff like that and end up leaving it too late!

A fairly slow Tuesday

Another mile this morning…

…and I’m still fairly slow this week, but I’m fine with that. I’ve been thinking about what I’m going to focus on in terms of my running this autumn and have a few challenges and ideas that I’m quite excited about. Just need to hear whether the London Marathon is going ahead in October or being postponed again (one week to go until the announcement is due!) and then I can make some concrete plans.

The rest of today has also been fairly slow going, but I should have all my admin and a bit of coding done by the end of the afternoon, so I can sneak in some more videogaming hours this evening! I spent eight hours playing Paper Mario: The Origami King yesterday and could honestly have played all night as well – I’m really enjoying it.

Similar day tomorrow… though hopefully not quite as slow!

Lucy Locket Loves casual leggings
I’m a bit obsessed with Lucy Locket Loves stuff at the moment – the bright patterns really cheer me up 🙂 These leggings are really comfy (though not quite as cosy as the loungewear, which is my new weekend go-to).

Rod Stewart – ‘Baby Jane’
The Beatles – ‘Ticket To Ride’
Harold Faltermeyer – ‘Axel F’

An impromptu Monday off

Back to the mile this morning…

…and now for a day off, as I was slightly busier over the weekend and so I made sure to get most of today’s stuff done yesterday in order that I could have a proper day on the sofa playing videogames today. See you tomorrow!

Next door's cat
Another photo from Geth’s lawnmowing session on Friday. Next door’s cat appears to be looking intently at the lawnmower wire here, but in actual fact it’s the patio doors beyond (not pictured), because as ever he’s desperate to get into our house.

Russ Abbot – ‘Atmosphere’
Yoko Shimomura – ‘Colony 9’
The Carpenters – ‘Top Of The World’
Duran Duran – ‘Shadows On Your Side’

All set

I got up early(ish) to do another mile this morning…

…because I had a very exciting appointment at the hairdresser, which I posted about here. I then spent the afternoon finishing off my day job work so that I’ve got a clean slate for next week and can properly enjoy the weekend in the meantime! I have so many games to play – my copy of Paper Mario: The Origami King arrived today, Beyond A Steel Sky (which I have been excited about for years) was released on Steam yesterday, and a couple of new Adventuron games have dropped in the last couple of days (one of which is in Spanish, so I will have to dust off my rusty linguistic skills).

I’m normally very strict about sleeping naturally but it has not been serving me well in terms of waking time recently, so I will set a couple of reasonably-timed alarms over the weekend in the hope that I will be able to get up, get my running and admin out of the way, and settle down to some gaming time.

I’ll post my running vlogs over the weekend as usual, but unless I get excited enough about one of the games I’m playing that I need to blog about it, don’t expect to hear anything else from me until Monday!

Geth mowing the lawn
Geth braved the garden today after multiple weekends on the bounce of it being ‘too wet for mowing’. It was apparently a haunting jungle experience and he will be making the effort to do it once a week from now on!

Getting a haircut during the apocalypse

The last time, until today, that I got my hair cut was just before Christmas, during the last-minute blurry rush that always takes place from around the 20th of December until Christmas Day. I fully expected I’d be back at the end of February, or, more likely, in March. I always intend to get my hair cut every couple of months, but it usually ends up being more like three.

So we got to mid-March, as expected, and I was just vaguely thinking that it was probably about time to go get my hair cut again…

…and then we all know what happened next. Hair appointments were off the table for a long time.

As such, I’ve spent the last four months getting steadily more and more annoyed by my hair. I’m not really bothered about what it looks like, as I’ve not been going out anywhere – it’s more that it gets in my way and in my eyes and in my face and just generally irritates.

So when it was announced last month that hairdressers would be able to open again, and my usual hairdresser started taking bookings for July… well, I got in there sharpish. I’ve generally been pretty cautious about returning to normal life (I haven’t been to a pub or restaurant or non-essential shop yet and probably won’t for several more months at least), but I made an exception in this case, partially because it was made clear that there would be a lot of precautions and everyone involved would be wearing masks and PPE.

So off I toddled this morning, excited about having normal-feeling hair again. I couldn’t wear the transparent mask I wrote about last week, because the elastic straps on it tie at the back of the head and would get in the way of my haircut. Instead, I wore a running buff (everyone in the running community calls them buffs after the brand name, though non-Buff brands tend to refer to them by other names such as ‘cowl’ or ‘snood’ or ‘neck tube’ or ‘multi-purpose headwear’… you get the idea) to cover my face, as I thought the back part would be low enough down my neck that it would be okay. However, after I’d been ushered in and was sitting down having my haircut, my hairdresser suggested that I wear one with ear loops next time, as it would make things easier. A good reason to start learning how to make my own transparent masks!

Haircut during a pandemic
Perspex, perspex everywhere. I appreciated that the staff were using perspex face visors, which meant that I could still lipread them… well, at points when I didn’t have to remove my glasses and hearing aids!

The salon did feel a bit bizarre with everyone – staff and customers alike – decked out in PPE and face masks, and perspex screens all over the place. However, I really appreciate that this is what the world needs to look like as we start moving on with our lives again – it was similar when I drove Geth to his hospital appointment yesterday and the entire hospital was full of people in masks – and to be honest, these kinds of precautions really do help me feel a lot safer when returning to situations I haven’t been in since before lockdown.

I paid an extra quid for the PPE (which is basically half a bin bag that you put over yourself during the appointment), and took it away with me so that I can clean it and bring it to reuse next time. I’ll need to remember that I’ve got it!

Post-haircut:

New hair
A bit tousled after walking home in the wind and rain (and also very moussed – it will look properly normal after I wash my hair tomorrow).

I’m home now with comfortable-feeling hair, which is all I wanted, really. I expect it will be a long time before we don’t need to take precautions at the hairdresser and similar situations, so it’s probable that the experience will be identical when I go for my next appointment in September.

Or October, as is more likely…

Bonus hours

A slightly out-of-pattern day today. First of all, I was up at six, which is extremely rare for me – I’m (a) a self-employed person who sets her own hours and (b) not a morning person. However, Geth had an early hospital appointment for a sleep-deprived EEG, meaning he’d had to stay awake all night, and so I was up and about early so that I could drive him to the hospital and back.

This meant that I didn’t go for my run until we got back…

…although the hospital appointment had been so early that I still managed to get out for the run about half an hour earlier than I did yesterday!

I’ve spent the rest of the day doing day job work and a bit of coding for a fun side project game. The plan is for the same again tomorrow… and then the new Paper Mario game will be showing up in the post, which is my weekend sorted 🙂

I’ve also got a hairdresser appointment tomorrow morning, for the first time since Christmas. It’ll all be very masked and sterile, but I’m so looking forward to having my lockdown hair sorted out!

Adventuron blank screen
A blank screen in the Adventuron editor, ready to code. I’ll see a few of these over the next few weeks as I have a lot of short, fun games planned for the rest of the summer.

Phone Box Thursday: Louden Place, Creetown

Rumours of the hiatus in the phone box collection have been greatly exaggerated! (Well, until next week, when I really will start doing my alternative Phone Box Thursday posts… unless another phone box picture shows up in the meantime!)

Mum and Dad found this phone box last Friday, while staying at their caravan in Dumfries and Galloway for the first time since lockdown started.

Red phone box

(Coordinates 54°89’63.6″N, 4°38’11.6″W.)

The box no longer has a phone in it but doesn’t seem to be at immediate risk of being removed. However, it is slightly rusty-looking, so possibly not being maintained quite as well as it could be.

More phone box goodness (in some form) next week!
